So Rob tell me why you use 1.6 crop mode when using the 1.4 extender.?

When I got the R5 I thought about it( using the r5 cropped mode) for BIF and realised leaving it in full mode would help me better place/find the bird in viewfinder quickly vs the cropped mode . Basically for me/my eye finding the airborne bird in a viewfinder showing a 560mm telephoto field of view is tons easier and quicker than in a cropped mode 890/900mm field of view Am I missing something here as many people are running in cropped mode and I cant work out what the benefit is ...that is apart from maybe not having to crop in post which is difficult to do as I dont think Ive ever successfully cropped in camera for wildlife where I havnt needed to adjust later in PP.

Apart from that only other thing I could think of was the file size issue of a 45mp sensor at full frame however cRAW covers that somewhat so really not sure what the Killer app is for running in cropped mode?

Cheers

You are not wrong at all for finding the birds being easier when in full frame. Why I use it is when my birds are a bit distant I get better eye/head detection being the subject is closer. When they are distant and I know I am going to crop anyway then I just frame in camera in crop mode and done vs a bigger file that I am cropping anyway. What I tend to do is get the closer shots in crop mode and use full frame for flight to help find the subject.

A few shots from Luke Air Force base with the 100-500 and RF 2x converter attached. The 2x converter is a bit much here, and I think the 1.4x converter is better suited instead, with the rare exception of a shot of a jet taxiing. At 1000mm the lens is at f/14, and even in the bright AZ sun I was still usually pushing ISO 1600-2500, add to that any atmospheric haze or heat and it does make it hard to get a sharp shot with good detail. Now, not impossible, just hard. Add to that, where I usually am the 600-1000mm range is too much so that made tracking pretty difficult as well.

The 600mm end was actually quite good, but again if I wanted that I would drop down to the 1.4 as it would be much more useable overall.

Would I use it for flight shots? No. Only if I really needed to and there was no other way. But overall I think the 1.4x and a bit of cropping would be a better solution
Would I use it for slower ground shots? Yes. On the right days (cool with a bit of cloud cover) you could get some nice clear shots with this at good distance I think and lower the shutter speed so that ISO isn't as much of an issue

So far the 2x, with the RF 100-500, does really well when you can control the shutter speed and have a slow/still subject. I think when Canon releases the RF "big white" lenses this thing will really shine though.

I'll be out this weekend at the wetland preserve and see how it does on some of the local birds...should be interesting.

This is 1000mm uncropped on an F35 coming in for landing. Needless to say it's a bit much and pretty hard to keep properly framed! When the subjects are close the detail is really good though

I haven't read all the pages yet after this, but this conversation makes no sense, IME. In crop mode, the R5 just magnifies the central APS-C area 1.6x in the viewfinder. The only things that do not magnify are the alternate aspect ratios, which come in the same choice set as the 1.6x crop.

Perhaps there is a setting not to magnify, and "box" the narrower FOV, instead, but I haven't seen such an option.

That confusion about just the box around was created by me. Sorry for that.
What you say here is absolutely correct.
There is no option (that I found ) that puts just the box w/o magnification for 1.6x.

One a side note. One of the downsides I have noticed of using the crop mode is that since my current camera setup doesn't really indicate when I'm in crop mode (or the indicator is there and I simply don't notice it) I'll often forget that I put the camera in crop mode causing me to take many shots without realizing it is in crop mode. I keep asking myself "how didn't I notice the field of view change"? But, it does happen. Sometimes I only do a few shots without changing lenses in a session and only notice I was in crop mode when I'm in post. That is really annoying. I have to figure out how to fix that as well as mapping the crop mode to one of the buttons so I can switch in and out quickly. I know many folks have done this, I've just never gotten around to doing it :(

There is a partial answer to this.
If you use Face+Tracking AF method, it uses entire VF area as a zone of focus (In Fullframe). You see white angular lines appearing at each corner indicating the zone.
Now if you switch to 1.6x crop these box lines come much inwards. That is the only indication at this point in time (that is available w/o pushing any button).
Second one is if you push the info button, there is a small tiny 1.6x icon that you see burried in the side menu icons.

Does Gambel just have a lot of quails, or do you guys all just keep finding the same one? What are the odds if that's the case!

Lord dying, man! I cannot express enough my admiration for your shots! So far I haven't been able to get outside with mine yet (personal issues) but oh! I am jealous!!

I see the focal length in the exif, but can you remember approximately how far you were away for this?

Thanks,

John

I know your question was not to me but I use crop mode all the time with the 1.4x and 2x even more. No issues at all. I even do it on the fly from full frame to crop and back again.

What is your setup for doing the FF <---> 1.6x switch on the fly?

Ordinarily I wouldn't bother trying to shoot hummingbird 80 feet away in the shadows right before sunset. But Costa's are very very rare this far north, especially in the winter so I wanted record shot. 100% crop and the original taken in crop mode at ISO 8000.
