Does anyone have a CFexpress card reader they like? Or do you just transfer directly from the camera? That's what I'm doing now, but I don't know how the speed works out. The reviews on the readers are all over the place, but seem to be largely negative.

I don't have one yet, but I have been twirling my mustache at the Sonnet Thunderbolt 3 XQD / CF Express dual slot reader, which looks really good on paper. What brands have you been looking at have negative reviews, if I may ask (for when the time comes for me to purchase)?

I transfer directly from the camera using the EOS utility. I use the utility to create a custom filename format:

IMG_YYMMDD_HHMMSS_WXYZ_NAME_BODY.cr3

WXYZ is a sequence number from 0001 to 9999. NAME is my first name or that of my wife. BODY is the name that we've given the camera (we have 5 bodies between us). This naming scheme allows my wife and I to combine images in a Windows folder, sort them by file name, and have them in the order in which they were taken. We can also see who took the photo, and what camera was used. It is important to verify that the date/time on each body is set correctly before shooting!

Direct transfers using USB-2 are pretty slow. USB-3 is fine even for a few thousand shots. I'm guessing the R5 will be USB-C which will be even faster.

Years ago I looked into doing this with a reader and Lightroom, but I wasn't able to get the name format the way I wanted it. Perhaps LR can do it now.

Not a economical purchase by any means between cards and readers to step into a R5

I'm using the Delkin unit, which I believe is the same as the Hoodman unit. I do my basic raw conversion in DPP right off of the card, then save the TIFF to my drive for further editing. Just editing and downloading images to the card gets this thing stupid hot. When I first bought the camera I thought the heat sink style of the reader housing was just a design choice for aesthetics, but it is clearly functional.

I have the CFExpress card reader made by Wyze that's $70 or so. Also reads SD cards. Works great.

Are you finding the lack of mirror slap vs the 1Dx-series cameras to be helpful in having less images that are just a tiny bit blurred due to slap?

Yes John, seeing a big difference during those lower shutter speeds.

I use the Blackjet reader. Very pleased with it.

I don't know how so many great pictures are taken with a POS camera that is always overheating! lol. Mine hasn't even shown the white warning sign yet. Mine seems to only take pictures of puppies.

That just means you aren't pushing the button fast enough. Time to go HS Continuous and rip off 60-100 shots with every push of the button

I’m using Pro Grade’s CFExpress B/XQD drive. It’s uses thunderbolt for its connection so its one of the faster drives.

Anyone has any experience with Delkin cards? Thinking about getting one but I have never used beans other than Sandisk, Lexar and Sony when it came to SD, CF, XQD and CFast cards.

Desire to learn; a camera & a few other things.
