Do you use a adapter on this combo, if so which one do you use?

Yes, the adjustment ring adapter.

no problems with focusspeed and hunting on the Sigma.

It will be interesting to see what AF life the R5 breathes into lenses that formerly had MFA and hunting issues with DSLRs. My G1 Tamron needs different MFA values for different focus distances, which means that you can only optimize for one distance at each of the two focal lengths that you adjust for.

Obviously, it is not going to focus as fast as my 400/4DO II does with a 1.4x TC in ideal AF situations where the system knows what it needs to do instantly, and the drive motor is the bottleneck, but if it is fairly fast and reliable, I could enjoy the zoom's versatility more (well, it won't even enable AF with my 90D, but I think the 90D has some kind of power restriction to the lens contacts that prevents some equipment combinations from working).

My G1 Tamron was much the same, I had to do MFA on the fly. That lens was a totally different kettle of fish on the R so I'm sure the R5 would be even better. Oh how I miss MFA'ing.......

Now thats neat. Swallows and ducks would have to be 2 of the hardest birds to shoot in flight and you nailed the swallow back a few posts and now the duck ...... and backlit to boot! Tack sharp.... Well done .

Swallows in flight are a challenge to keep in the frame, if they are of any size in the frame, regardless of AF ability. You could shoot wide and crop hard with a hyperfocal f-number, but then your swallows would be highly pixelated, highly diffracted relative to their size, and very noisy. Getting a larger aperture closer is what gets swallow SNR and analog detail, but to get pixels-on-swallow, that requires a very narrow angle of view, too, which is where the tracking gets difficult.

All good point and... if you can see or position yourself where they're landing often (nest boxes) then you're able to get shots of them in the same plane of focus but still in flight/isolated.

Rob, you are rocking the 400mm lens on R5. It is making my 1dxiii/R5 decision very hard.

If it helps with the decision I just came back from selling one of our 1dx Mark III's and Amy's 1dx Mark II today. The R5 is a great camera, at least for wildlife as that is the most I have done with it. The Af system is the best I have used.

First time in a long time today i got to shoot this sport, it's been about six years since last time and back then i had a crappy old camera and lens. This time i shot with the R5 and electronic shutter. It felt like childs play to catch the moments. So easy i could probably have done in blindfolded. :)
