Archibald You must be quackers! More info | Sep 21, 2021 08:07 | #5102 Terrycanon wrote in post #19285937 I'll be interested if you switch. I like my EF 100-400 but it's so heavy. The RF 100-500 is lighter, I believe, but changing to the RF would be costly. I bought the 800mm f/11 some time ago and use it almost all the time now for birds. Its light weight is a big attraction. I take my 100-400 II along but it stays in the trunk of the car. If I bought the 100-500, I'm afraid this costly bit of kit would also spend its time in a bag or trunk instead of in my hands. Of course it has its plusses, like its minimum focus distance, but I'm not sure how often that would get used. Canon R5 and R7, assorted Canon lenses, Sony RX100, Pentax Spotmatic F

Yeah I have not used the 100-400ii as much lately as I'm now in landscape heaven... but... yesterday I was reminded how heavy it feels!

Weight is only 1.4 lbs. The question is how good it is optically. I'm waiting for it to get out to a few reviewers and see what they think of it.

I've seen plenty of reviews of the 800 f11 on YouTube and they seem fairly positive, particularly when it is used in good light. Comparisons of the 100-400 paired with the x1.4 extender, which I have, against the 100-500 are generally in favour of the 100-500 but it's not a massive difference in sharpness apparently. I must say the cost is putting me off. The 800 f11 is certainly something for me to think about. The weight of the 100-400 is getting too much for me, especially with the EF to RF converter and the x1.4 extender on board. Then you end up with a 560mm lens. 800 sounds better! I'd like to see some of your images with the 800 sometime. It's all about the light...

I've rented the 100-500 and initially thought the marginal increase in IQ didn't quite justify the cost. But this is my walk around lens, so I would get plenty of use out that extra IQ. And losing 12 oz (the adapter + t/c) is getting more attractive. I think the 800/11 would be too limiting. Not just the aperture, but also the MFD. I like being able to go from birds to butterflies on a hike. Ken

One question, I noticed when I go to take a shot, I can acquire focus like I have a million times... I'm then done shooting, maybe hiking/walking... and I can hear the lens still spazzing out looking for focus. What setting do I need to change? It seems like the only way is to turn the camera off completely. With the 800/11? I haven't noticed that... but my ears are very old, so you never know. On mine, I can be walking around with the camera on my side, and I can hear it frantically looking for focus. So I'm forced to just shot off the camera entirely. Trying to figure out what setting this would be to tell it to give up after a few seconds as I'm obviously not even taking photos. Any chance you have continuous AF enabled in the camera? (first tab in the AF menu) Ken
