John I do it all the time to prefocus say on a perch and there is no bird at all, it just puts a large AF square or multiple depending very quickly. Usually it will pick the nearest target. I do not see any more speed using non animal vs animal AF. The only thing is if it is a real busy area, lots of branches, weeds etc then better to use single point then go to Animal AF.

Rob...are you setting up two buttons like the guy did here https://youtu.be/-nnRqgXu7QI?t=464 (external link) ?

Seems the best of all worlds. Interested how you have set up your AF functions!

Thanks; that sounds great.

I really want to use an AF system that rarely requires any changes in settings. With the DSLRs I've used, I need completely different AF patterns for perched and flying birds, so I usually miss sudden BIF opportunities, or am filling a frame so well with a bird that I need to move the AF point, which there is often no time for.

I do have a 2 button setup, did a 2 button setup on the 1dx Mark III also. I use BBF so my manual focus ring works if you leave the AF on the shutter the manual focus ring only works in one shot not in Servo. You if you do not use BBF then you can have a 3 button setup also. I have my back button to Animal eye and my * button to Zone. I have my AF zones setup on my control ring, so If I need single point etc, I just tun the ring. I use C1 to quickly switch to the 1.6 crop mode. I have my DOF button setup to shut off Animal eye.

No need for that anymore John. I had my DSLR cameras setup like that too for different shooting scenarios. Now for the most part I use Animal tracking and it just does its thing.

Thanks!

15 ft maybe. Just chillin ߘ in the backyard they got used to us. Was pretty surprised how the EAF was able to lock onto their tiny heads.

More car photos from this weekend. I apologize for the boring background but this car meet took place at a parking.

This is what happens to your tires before the start to spin.

First opportunity to try a new 10-stop ND. Nothing fancy - just out the back yard towards the sunset. 2:20 exposure.

How would you compare the RF 100-500mm against the 100-400mm II? Is it worth the upgrade?

Just got my R5 yesterday morning, so of course we had to test the AF eye tracking especially, with our dogs. I'm stunned by how well it does, even with fast-moving subjects, distracting elements, and so on. Not 100% perfect, but SO many more keepers than with my 5D Mark IV. And the 20 FPS electronic shutter is ridiculous. Looking forward to lots more testing, but initial impression is extremely impressive - and fun! Really love the 70-200 RF lens. So compact, with fast focusing, lovely sharpness, and beautiful bokeh.

A few examples:

Definitely a little scary walking in the river (about knee-deep with slippery rocks below) with my new camera and lens, but I was very careful! :-D
