Yet another unhelpful comment from you. Thanks.

you are clearly eager to post images from your new gear. I'll leave it at that.

Good. New gear? Hardly. Constructive criticism is one thing but there is no need for jibes.

Agreed; we should be here to help eachother improve, so suggest something that could be changed. Even 25+ years into this "hobby," I'm always learning something new, and I tell myself on a daily basis that I suck at photography. Why? It builds motivation to become better!

As far as the photo in question:

For these macro like shots at longer focal lengths, usually what I do is choose different areas to focus on, then fire away, this way, you have several shots to pick through, some with different areas will be sharper than others. DOF is a strange subject, but, I've had best luck going with the almost closest object first, focus on that, then fire a few. I think F8 was a good choice here, unless you wanted to go higher ISO and more f stop...

Generally speaking, the longer the focal length, the more the DOF becomes a potential issue, especially teamed up at near Min focus distance in shots like these. You also have the challenge of plane of focus, which, with animals/creatures can be fun as you don't want to scare them off, but you also want to try to flatten them out a bit to get most of them in focus... if that's the goal... or you can go to the other extreme and go super shallow dof with just an eye in focus shooting from a lower angle... just try different angles/slow down.. that's how I roll atleast :-D

Jay has some good examples on here for DOF focus stacking using Helicon focus (costs dough tho!) - so if you decide to go down the rabbit hole of dedicated macro work, he has some great examples on here!

So, nice shot, and keep at it!

Hello, Dennis. I find that really interesting. It's not something I've tried. I'll have to give it a go. I like the idea of setting it up on My Menu. Thanks for the tip. - Terry

I, too, have Focus Stacking in My Menu for quick access. Anything I do frequently is in My Menu. Focus stacking is not really time consuming as far as setting it up but it can be time consuming in-software stacking process. I use Canon's Digital Photo Professional for stacking. It's a free download, so it's a good place to start. Here's one that I just did in my home studio. I think it was done 1/125sec, f/4 and 12 images stacked.

Thank you very much. I have set up focus bracketing in My Menu (along with Format card) and will give it a go.

For something like a butterfly at a slight angle just rock back and forth a little while shooting a short high speed burst. I'm a little unsteady so it happens naturally. Then just pick a few images so that each part is in focus. 3 or 4 will probably be enough to stack.

The automatic bracketing is great for more controlled stacks of subjects that won't fly away while you're setting it up.

Cool!! I've never tried it myself, but used helicon during the 30 day trial for a few compression shots...

Others here are lightyears beyond me on this topic so I'll let 'em help ya!

Reminder: I love what we have here because it's on the up n up; IG is a very depressing forum for those looking to learn/be better/become the best of themselves, so I just have a new found appreciation for what we have here, lets keep it that way.

Thanks!!! I didn't bring the tripod of anything, but I think it'll be worthy of a future night hike perhaps this summer :-D

Encouraged by knowledgeable forum members, I had my first bash at focus stacking today. No tripod, just handheld in an effort to see if I could make it work. Only four images stacked here and I used the depth composing tool in DPP. Nothing special in the result and a long way to go, but it is a technique I shall certainly be trying again. Thanks to those of you who gave me the incentive to tackle focus stacking.
