Not too bad for ISO 25600 and indoor bad flickering/color shifting grow lamps. Oh, and a 500mm f7.1 lens at minimum focus distance.

First flying swallow shots I'm not embarrassed to show in public.

@kd-reno - And beautiful they are too!

Hoping to get some practice with Swallows myself over the coming months - with the same gear as you, but rather less skill I fear!

Thanks. These were about 10% skill and 90% equipment.

Swallows make frequent sharp changes in direction, but sometimes you can spot a more predictable pattern. In this case there was a flock swirling around feeding over a large pond. But there was a small narrow arm where they would fly back and forth in a relatively straight line at a predictable distance. So I get some credit for situational awareness, and my mediocre panning skills were up to the task this time.

The rest goes to the equipment. I don't know whether it's the latest R5 firmware or the new 100-500, but the autofocus is fast and it stays locked on. The resolution was a big help as well. The first shot was cropped to 11.3MP - 25% of the frame. Panning is easier when the subject is farther away, so this helps.

This was also the first time I truly appreciated the 20 fps in ES mode. These two shots were from a 15 shot burst. All were in focus, so I could pick and choose based on wing position. That was definitely a new experience for me.
