Tom I've been admiring your cactus flowers. I saw your other comment above but curious if those cactus growing in the wilds come alive with flowers that can be seen from afar (100 plus yards away), or they're just a few flowers here and there?
Do cactus "put on a show" when it's flowering season?
Hi Richard...
Thanks for the comments. During April and May the Sonoran Desert cactus blossoms put on quite a show with their various colored blossoms. Some, like the Hedgehog cactus, have very, very small blossoms (less than the diameter of a penny). Others, like the Argentine cactus, have huge blossoms (sometimes 9-10 inches across). I was just out in my yard photographing the blossoms on a Prickly Pear cactus, so I thought I'd include an overall photo of the whole cactus. In the first photo, to give you a sense of scale, I put a yard stick across some of the pads (also known as nopales). This particular cactus is probably at least 6 feet tall by about 7 feet wide. If you look carefully at the edges of the pads you'll see dozens of buds getting ready to bloom.
I also included a red circle to show you an area where three blossoms are located. The second photo shows you a close-up of the three circled blossoms.
Springtime in the Sonoran Desert is truly a special time of year.
Tom
