How well does the 100-400 work with the R5 Tom? Does it attain focus quick despite using the adapter?

I haven't noticed any difference in focus response between the 5D Mark IV I had before and the R5 with its adapter. I'm still getting familiar with the new camera, and the one thing I've noticed is that if I'm focused on something close (with the Animal Eye Auto Focus engaged) and then try to switch to something much farther away, the R5/100-400 combo seems to have trouble finding the distant object. However, I believe this behavior is not related to the camera/lens combination, but more by my lack of understanding the various focusing settings and customization options. A lot to learn, but for me, it's worth the effort.

Others here who have more experience with the R5 may be able to offer a more intelligent assessment for you.

Tom this is not you at all, it is a mirrorless thing. When the focus is way off, sometimes the AF will just sit there and do nothing. The best work around is use the spot AF, this tends to cycle thru the entire AF range like DSLR's do. I actually have my camera setup so I can have Face/eye AF or quickly go to spot AF to help focus a bit, then right back to AED. Using the limiter switch will help too.

Your approach to solving it looks like a great way to jump back and forth. Thanks for the tip.

By the way, your photographs with the R5 and your in-depth knowledge of its operation made my decision to buy the camera so much easier. It is really helpful to know if I have a question, I can usually just search the threads where you post and find the answer.

I still have a 10-22 and I'm awaiting a backordered R5. I'd read EF-S glass worked on the R adapter and I'm eager to see how that 10-22 will do. I understand it doesn't give you 10mm at the wide end, but what field of view do you end up with?

1.6x so it is roughly 16mm-35mm and cropped to 17MP

10mm stays 10mm. On a FF sensor it will be cropped though, either by selecting the crop mode of the camera or by limited coverage on the sensor (black area around the image).
