I personally know the reviewer, you can count on his review when it comes to wildlife

In the video he talks about the EVF delay when you bring the camera to your eye which caused some missed shots for me when birding with my R. He suggests to keep the LCD running to speed it up. There is still bit of delay with my R. I messed around with some setting this morning and find out some new things. I'll post my findings as soon as I verify one more thing. Maybe someone here can help.

You can select multiple buttons the custom settings (camera icon on the Q screen or Custom Dials - orange menus - tab 3) to manually toggle the EVF and LCD displays back and forth. The R5 manual is a little different than the R. With the R you can disable the EFV sensor. The R5 is worded differently.

After assigning a button to flip the displays back and forth (I selected the MF-N) and use this menu and select either Viewfinder or Screen. Will the button you assigned flip back and forth between the two? Is the EVF sensor actually disabled?

Thanks

It feels like he should have taken the camera out of center point AF and instead use zone. Each time it lost focus, it went back to the center point, and then you have to retrain that onto the bird. If you use zone or the full frame, it will track that bird throughout the frame and not bounce off it. At least again, from what I have seen with other videos.

I'll mention that to him, thanks TS. I know his usual MO for shooting is center point AF, he doesn't trust Af systems. Perhaps the R5 will make him a believer.

It's a guess, I just kept seeing the focus come off the bird and then go to center AF. I think if he just lets the system track the bird, it would be a bit more consistent perhaps? Report back, I am very curious!

I'll post it anyway. People can mess around with it if they like. This is with my R and the R5 may be more responsive.

1. You can set the M-Fn or other buttons to manually toggle between the Display and EVF. I'm using the M-Fn but more buttons are available. You can still use Auto by keeping the EVF sensor enabled but it is faster using the M-Fn button. There is a bit of a delay when the EVF sensor does it.

2. As long as whatever is on the Display is the same as in the EVF using the M-Fn button is quick. If you are toggling between for example between the Q screen on the Display and the scene you are shooting in the EVF there is a delay. The LCD Display has several different viewing options.

3. The VF always shuts off after about 6 seconds if there is nothing in front of the EFV sensor. If you have the power savings settings set so it does not power down and you press the Shutter or BBF before lifting the camera to your eye the EVF will be awake by the time you get it there. If you have have it set to power off before you press the Shutter or BBF before bringing the camera to your eye there is a delay.

4. Years of not pressing the Shutter or BBF is a hard habit to break. You can avoid this by tricking the EVF sensor with some tape but there has to be about a ¼“ gap between it and the sensor. Putting directly on the sensor didn’t work. I taped it using the two outside edges of the EF eyepiece. You are ready to lift and shoot when you see a bird. I'm going to try and come up out with a better removable option if I choose to use this option.

Will the RAW files from the R5 open directly in Lightroom right now?

Not last I tried.

EDIT: I was wrong. Apparently something on the new CR3 file format in the R5 does not play with lightroom yet. Something on the dual pixal Raw maybe? Thanks TeamSpeed. ORIGINAL: My understanding is the R5 uses the CR3 Raw file, which is the same as my Canon 90D uses. It opens on my current Lightroom with no problem and has since I bought the body about 8-9 months ago.

Just because it has a suffix of CR3, it doesn't mean it is the same exact file structure. The CR2 suffix was used for years, but the file format changed a few times.

Spoke with my buddy yesterday evening, here is what he had to say

"I was not set on center AF I was set on Animal Eye AF with Tracking. The starting point for getting lock on in that setting is the small center zone area. Once the camera locked on with eye focus it tracked the bird. It never really lost the bird I just let up on the AF button when it lost eye tracking and tried to get the camera to get on the eye again by reinitalizing AF. I have used Zone on the R5 and it is excellent as is Animal Eye AF. I trust both. AF has come a long way since having to depend on a single center AF point "

Ah that makes sense, with him letting off the AF button. Cool! The visual effect looked like the camera just gave up.

Coming from a 5Div, the eye af on the new R5 is pretty amazing.. It's basically a cheat code shooting wide open! IBIS is a big plus as well.
