good points here sir..in my hands 90D failed miserably with BIF. that's why I got the r5. most cameras can get away with perched birds. I am still looking at pics with my canon 20D. I personally was looking at a 1d series focus for dynamic images without the bulk and a few more pixels. I hear there is a new rp on the way..maybe the 90D reinvented .

Nov 20, 2020 19:07 | #1459 John Sheehy wrote in post #19154688 I come from the other direction, having used the 90D before the R5. While I appreciate the higher number of frames that are in focus with the R5, both as a percent and in absolute number with faster bursts (especially in 20fps ES mode), the 90D is superior for focal-length-limited photography when it focuses right; 1.84x as many pixels-on-subject, and slightly less noise at high ISOs, when normalized for subject. In many real-world cases, however, the R5 focuses significantly better with a 2x than the 90D does with a 1.4x, so I can get 1.08x the pixels-on-subject with the R5, with more intelligent AF, when AF would be challenging with the 90D. What I can't do easily, however, is go past 2x with the R5, so I have nothing comparable to the 90D with the 2x, which, in some situations does, in fact, get mostly keepers, AF-wise, and the IS lenses on the 90D seem to be more stable than on the R5 with supplemental IBIS. Well, having an AF system that can see animal bodies, heads, and even eyes is great, but when you actually get out there, that doesn't help with birds that are in mixed light, darker than their background, facing away from you, only turning their head in your direction for 1/10s, etc. These things are still going to make bird photography challenging, until cameras start spraying sedatives on birds and hypnotizing them to pose in good light. I also had the 90D (and 5DS) prior to the R5. The 90D was a great camera for me, but it really made me work for the shot, and I did miss quite a few that I would have liked had the AF decided to stay locked on. When the 90D locked on, and the shot was clear, it produces and amazing result, no doubt about it. The R5 on the other hand, has an AF-system that puts the 90D to absolute shame. I have entire strings of 13-20 action shots (birds, jets, etc) that are all sharp, and with the 100-500 + 1.4x converter I'm right there with the 90D and 100-400L MKII that I used to use. I rarely used the 1.4x converter with my 90D as I didn't like how is slowed down the AF. It was fine for relatively static subjects, but once the action kicked up I wasn't always happy with the results. The R5+100-500+1.4x is a different story as I don't even notice a difference with the 1.4x on or off other than the max aperture. Flickr stream: https://flic.kr/ps/se6hB

I'd also like to see what IS lens mode reported. Can't figure our why they would not have done that by now. Image Editing OK

Nov 21, 2020 13:33 | #1464 One of my favorite birds is the Verdin. It is tiny, colorful, fast and elusive. I have had very few keepers over the years, so when I finally capture one, it's always a treat. The problem most often is getting a frame that is usable, and the first photo here shows a quick grab shot straight out of camera. I would normally hit delete on something like this, but I figured the R5 might just allow me to salvage something. The second photo is the final output after running it through Capture One. Needless to say, I really like the R5, and Capture One. Image hosted by forum (1074084) © Tom in Arizona [SHARE LINK] THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. Please log in to see the good quality stuff.
