I'd like to hear people's experiences in moving from a DSLR & EF lens system to Canon's new mirrorless & RF lenses.

I have a version 1 EF 70-200 2.8L IS lens that I love & works perfectly. Thing is, I haven't used it since I got the 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L IS II lens. KEH would buy the 70-200 for about $700. Might be able to sell it for a few hundred more myself. My thoughts are that I've gotten great use out of it since purchased in 2005. Might as well sell & put that money toward the RF 100-500, right? After all, the RF lenses are designed to work optimally with the R5.

Same for the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS II, 24-70 2.8L I, 16-35 2.8L I. I could invest that in RF lenses.

Can anyone talk some sense into me?

Heya,

Well, if you haven't used the 70-200 in a while and you're mainly using the 100-400, unless you need it and if you want other lenses, it sounds like you want to go longer and longer. If that 70-200 is version 1 IS then sell it now. I'm impressed KEH will buy it at $700 for a version 1 lens. You'd be hard pressed to get that on the used market at the moment considering how old it is and since there's literally Version 2, Version 3 and the RF version available now. So if you think you can get that price or more, I'd go ahead and let that lens go unless you are just attached to it.

Your other short L zooms are fine. But they too are version 1's so maybe let them go and move forward with RF unless you just want to use adapters. There's no size savings either way, as the EF lenses need adapters, etc.

Newer glass, newer coatings, better micro-contrast.

Very best,

Thank you, M. As I said, lenses are an investment & I've gotten good use out of them. If I can sell them now and get money while I can, I think it's a good idea to use that money toward an investment in native RF lenses. I just needed someone to help twist my arm.

I didn't find EF tele zooms to be odd on RF. They are long anyways.
I don't like how 16-35 2.8 II feels on my RP with adapter. It feels disproportionately long. I might just sell it.
I'm OK with 24-105 F4 L RF, will try to switch to it from EF L.
No plans for any other L RF zooms, way too overpriced and too huge to be practical for me.
And after dealing with Canon service and 50L, which they weren't able to repair back to factory build, I'm not considering Canon lenses as an investment. They are nothing but tools, which wear out with time and use and has to be replaced.

Agree lenses are tools. Calling them investments somehow justifies the purchase for me ;)

I'm going all R/RF. I don't know how much difference those extra 3 pins for faster transmission speeds claims will make but I believe they will. If I'm going to spend that much on this body I want everything the new system offers.

I sold everything EF except my100-400 II which may never see action again. I missed out on the first shipment of the R5. By the time I get it the 100-500 may be out so that will go on the R5 and the 100-400 II will go up for sale. I also ordered the RF 1.4. I do have the R and RF 24-105 (lens will be glued to the body) and that excellent combo will be my travel/walk-around kit. Basically my next point and shoot.

I'll probably pick up the 800 DO later. Not sure about the 2X but we will see what Canon lenses comes out with next. I won't be able to afford a big fast white but I'm hoping for a 500 5.6 equivalent to Nikons 500 PF. That I can afford. Jaren Polin (The Fro) did put the 2X on the 800 DO but at f22, etc I'm not sure. I'll try the 1.4 out first if I get the 800. 1120 is pretty decent.

It’s just money, right? The RF lenses will definitely shine on the R5/6.

I hope. I'm going to break even with everything sold but I won't have as many lenses.
