I have a large number of vintage family photos (prints) that need to be scanned. Not many negatives, but there are some.
So I'm in the market for a flat bed scanner. But after checking around the net, I see there are either very low priced scanners
and a very few high priced scanners. Mid priced scanners seem to be gone. The Epson V600, V700, V800, and Canon 9000F
have all been discontinued.

So it comes down to Canon's LiDE 300, 400 series, and Epson's V19, V39, and V370. These are priced between $70 and $130.
So the question is...how good are these scanners? The price is right but I don't know about the scan quality.

Another option is the Epson V850. A very high quality scanner at a very high price.

Any ideas?

I would check on BH which scanners they have. Just recently I was told about some Epson flatbed scanners been capable of ICE not only on negatives, but on old photos.

Already did. I only see inexpensive scanners w/o digital ice, or the expensive V850.

Plustek makes scanners, I'll have to check those out.

I've got a Canon 8800F, predecessor to the 9000F......great piece. The results are fabulous, if your negs and slides are good to start with.

I'm sure they're still available used on ebay.

Thanks, but I'm leery about buying used electronic gear. My experience doing that has not been good.

I may just spring for the Epson V850. It comes with Digital Ice and SilverFast SE Plus 8, X-Rite i1 software.
I already spent a ton of money on camera gear, so why not ;-)a

For some reason Epson & Canon no longer make mid-priced photo scanners.

I have the V850, probably have had it for 2 - 3 years now and never had an issue and have been very happy with the results. Silverfast has a steep learning curve ( at least for me) so most of the time I use VueScan 9 Pro software. I need to find the time to work with Silverfast, I am sure I would get better results with more options available but I get by with VueScan for now. One thing I don't like is SilverFast can only be registered/used with one scanner. I have 4 scanners and VueScan works with all 4. Eventually I want to scan the important photos and slides to create quality scans and for archiving. So far my scans have just been for work or simple slide shows so higher quality hasn't been a necessity as of yet. Anyway, I am not sorry I spent the extra money getting the better scanner.

The film/photo scanner market seems to have vaporized, so the offering on the market by traditional suppliers of quality film scanners has gone with the apparent demand. Like Nikon scanners.

Most of what is left on the market now is 'amateur' and not high quality.

Canon 8000F came with 4x5 film holder, as well as MF and 135 holders, but the 8800F only came with MF and 135 format holders.

I have an Epson V700, not a fan of it for 35mm negatives. May be good enough for you if you are not too critical, not sure if the V850 is any better.

I figure most photographers from the film era have already bought flat bed photo scanners. Many photographers, say 40 year old or younger, grew up with digital
and have no need for a scanner. So the market demand for photo scanners is small. No facts, just my speculation.

Very sound logic.

I purchased the Epson perfection scanner. Its has auto crop and scans more than one photo depending on the size. It made easy work of 800 family photos.
