Very well timed, that shot, Tom. The eyes with the half-closed membrane look amazing.

We have just come out of a heatwave that lasted like forever. 8 days with temps well over 30ÂșC. The longest heatwave on record. Pfff... It seems going back to colder weather is giving me a boost in energy. Early morning walks are simply lovely. With added benefit that you're the only one out, so no risk of getting infected with Covid-19.

These are our resident domestic (domesticated?) geese. There's a whole group of them, just wandering about my neighbourhood. They're in the canals, or just chilling on houseboat decks or like this, on the side of the road. Actually these were the very first birds I ever photographed, back in 2008. Photographed them with a Canon Powershot SX100, my very first digital camera. And it got me hooked.

Speaking of eyes. These geese have rather beautiful eyes too. Cropped this one a bit.

I've been photographing a couple of Spadefoot Toads this past week. . The species of Spadefoot we have here in eastern Washington are the Great Basin Spadefoot.

My favorite so far is this one in which the toad's eye membrane is halfway closed. . I think the Spadefoots' eyes are so beautiful, and the half-closed membrane just helps to draw the viewer's attention to the eye.

Taken with the 100-400mm v2 with a 1.4 extender and a 20mm extension tube, because these guys are tiny - only about 1 1/8 inch around. . The eye itself is about the size of a .17 caliber bee bee. . Cropped a bit to show the details of the toad more, and the surrounding sand/sky habitat a bit less.

"...the 100-400mm v2 with a 1.4 extender and a 20mm extension tube..."

Now I have to get out and try that.

how close were you to the frog? @400mm?

I didn't measure ..... I really should have measured it! . I meant to, but he toad kept hopping off and made things difficult. . But I would guesstimate that the toad was about 20 inches from the front element of my lens. . Next time I have a go at him (hopefully tomorrow morning), I will remember to measure, and let you know. . In any case, I was within 1 inch of MFD. . Couldn't have gotten any closer than I did'

You may be interested to know that I also had a few rounds with the toad with the 2x extender, the 1.4 extender, and the 20mm extension tube all on there at the same time. . It did let me fill the frame quite a bit more, but the optical quality of all those stacked elements left something to be desired, and I have yet to find an image from that combination that is perfectly sharp.

I really need a macro lens for what I am trying to do, but the 100-400mm is holding me over until I can get one.

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".
