Sooo, I bought the RF 1.4x extender and took it out for a serious spin with the 800/11. The combo obviously needs good light, both in quantity as in quality. But my field test showed it is useable. In the right conditions. Right now I was dealing with cold air, the kind that kills colours. But still quite pleased with the shots.

Great crested grebe on a nearby lake @1120mm. And big crops too!

By the way, I wonder why the lens is not filled in automatically. I always have to do that manually.

Those look like right solid results there, for sure.

I think the lens must be in you gear(forum profile) and with converter I get 'unsure' and have to confirm(at least with 100-400ii).

Not too bad, right? And this was in less than favourable light and with the bird really far away so I cropped way too much. So yeah, quite pleased with the results.

The lens is in my gear list. And I have always had to fill in the lens manually with this lens. Not sure why.

Very nicely done, Levina! I like those results. Congrats on your new 1.4. I'm going to use mine today for first time to try to get an ibis that usually stays far, far away. We'll see.

I had an unboxed 1.4 ext sitting around (it's been waiting for the 100-500 which has been on backorder for months), but today I decided to pair it with the 800 f11 in an attempt to get a distant Glossy Ibis, a rare visitor to this part of Maryland. It usually stays ~400-500' away, but in this case it flew to within ~175-200'.

At the local marsh, a Pied-billed Grebe in breeding colors and a frog keeping watch (the frog was so close I was surprised to get focus, especially with the 1.4 ext in use).

What an amazing looking bird the Ibis is, Steve. Cool that he was still there and you got ‘em!

And again good results @1120mm. I can’t believe how well this combo works.
I’m actually starting to think of getting the RF 2x TC as well: 1600mm @f/22? Mwah, should be doable...

Crazy numbers suddenly not so crazy anymore!

Nice catch Steve! Wild how similar they look to the White Faced Ibis I see around here in NorCal.
