Thanks very much, Don, Dennis, Cary and Patrick! Much appreciate your help.

So, I watched the videos in the link that i-G12 provided and learned quite a few things.

The most helpful for me was Jan Wegener with his AF settings and customization of buttons. I now have back button focus enabled on AF-ON, just as I wanted and I have set my basic AF method to Spot AF, which I always used on the 1D4 as well. I have put Animal/Eye detection AF on the * button so I can now switch quickly from one to the other. I just tested it out and it works pretty well, although I need to have more practice obviously.

The Whistling Wings guy is rather talkative (Wegener is much more to the point) but he did say something interesting, namely that older EF lenses like the 400/5.6L and the 300/4L cause more lag in the EVF than newer EF lenses.. As I was shooting BIFs with the 400/5.6L yesterday, this may have been a contributing factor.

We are having a very gray day today. It's been drizzling all morning and I didn't go out. Maybe later. But I did hang out my window and shot some gulls, using my new settings and with the 300/4L. And it did surprisingly well, I must say. I also tried out the electronic shutter. Man, that thing is just sick!

Here's a gull shot. No colour to speak off. It is such a day...
And as my transfer cable hasn't arrived yet, I once again had to use Camera Connect to download a few images to the Mac via my iPhone. So I still have jpegs only.

Love this, Levina. You're well on the way to cracking it. How did you find the EVF today?

Curious.. the 1DX III and R6 share the same sensor, curious as to why DXO hasn't produced its score on the R5/R6 yet? Or doesn't DXO use the score from Canon's latest mirrorless cameras?

The AF settings are laid out a bit strange I feel, so definitely go through each of the AF menus to see what settings you may need to tweak. There are many sliders that are all separated from each other, beyond the AF cases. They all play a part. It is a bit daunting! It just feels like to me they ought to put all AF settings/sliders under the Case folders and this way you can set up different cases with all the settings as a "package". But I am sure the engineers have a rhyme to their reason, I just haven't figured it out yet.

Thanks, Annie! I am pretty pleased with the gull too.

The EVF was much better today. Maybe it was the 300/4L. I don't know, but everything just worked better this time. The gull came flying toward me and I was able to track him until he disappeared above my head, problably landing on the roof of my building. I waited until he was close enough and took 7 shots before he was gone and all are in perfect focus. I'm already beginning to warm up to the camera! :-P

There are a lot of options indeed, Cary. I was not familiar with cases so I decided for now to just use Case 1 (versatile multi purpose setting), thinking I can try out different cases once I am more familiar with the camera. Jan Wegener said he uses Case 1 because it is the smoothest, least jittery AF case. No idea if that is true, but I take his word for it. I will still try out the other cases in due time. But yeah, a lot to take in...

I've used cases on the 7DII and could never quite get the fine tuning to do what I wanted. The problem was especially acute when changing between different birds and flight patterns. So far on the R6 I've only used the Auto setting for cases and it works well for everything that I've shot.

Good question. I always feel DXO doesn't really like anything Canon...

I remember reading Canon's AF guide for the 1D4 after I bought one. Well, they make it sound so easy, this and that setting for this and that subject when it does this and that. Right. Until you try it yourself and then it doesn't quite work as they said it would. I think Auto is not a bad choice at all! :-P

Should officially be in the R6 club Monday :-)

Having the original R I wasn’t initially interested in the R6 due to the lower mp sensor. I decided I would sell one of my two R bodies and upgrade to the R5, keeping the other R as a second body. Made my order for an R5 in mid-July and finally came up on the list when the third shipment arrived. Got notice that it shipped on Tuesday and should be arriving on Monday 10/5.

After seeing R6 pics and reading the reviews, I decided that having the R5 would make it easier to have second body with fewer MP. After all, the 6D was only 20 mp and I loved it (my first FF DSLR)

After getting over the mental block of lower resolution, I realized that I will likely be much happier with two cameras that are near identical in controls and AF system. Over a couple of weeks I did a wonderful job of convincing myself that I would eventually get the R6 as my second body and sell off the remaining R. Maybe for Christmas or my birthday in February.

Well, funny thing happened the day after my R5 shipped. I got an email from Gordon at CPW about a limited qty of R6 bodies available immediately, first come-first served. And at a discount.

Well, Christmas done came early and I pulled the trigger on an R6 before the R5 has even arrived. It shipped out from same store the day after the R5 and grip did and it looks like it has caught up with the R5 in transit and now both should be here Monday. Already picked up a couple of the new batteries when the local store had them in stock. Very happy to see that R5 and R6 use the same grip, so one should be plenty for me.

Looks like I will be selling of my R sooner than I expected. Next week is gonna be a good one!

There is definately a learning curve with both R5 and R6. I decided to setup both the same way as Jan Wegener describes in his video. And it requires getting used to because I have never really gotten into the habit of using back-button focus. And now I am forcing myself to use dobble back button focus

Canon Price Watch. I've purchased several items through them. Their "street prices" have discounted prices on many Canon products.

Not a huge discount on the R6, $2449 but no tax or shipping. With my CC 2% cash back, it knocks it down another $50. R5 was $150 off, $225 after my CC cash back. Got the RF 28-70mm f/2L for $570 off list:eek:

I've had many dealings with CPW, only issue was finding the patience for the time it takes to arrive (about a week from order). I've bought the following via CPW:
EOS 5D IV
EF 11-24mm f/4L
EF 100-400mm II L
EOS R/RF 24-105 f4/L kit
RF 70-200mm f/2.8L
EOS M6 Mark II/18-150mm kit
EOS R5
EOS R6

Where did you get the "no Tax" and "Free shipping" option? Did you say (somewhere) you found some items at a Canadian store?

Depending on what dealer is offering what, CPW will reply with one or two options. Some of the dealer's charge tax, some do not. Generally speaking, the ones that don't are a Canadian store (CPW prefers they not be publicly named).
