More testing today. Again a steady drizzle and showers all day. So I shot the gulls again, from my bedroom window (I have sliding doors there so it's quite comfortable). I wish I had more exciting birds to show you but gulls sure are great test subjects!

The cable to connect the camera to my Mac with still hasn't arrived. vmad So again I had to upload them wirelessly to my iCloud pages and have still only access to jpegs. They’re okay but I really want to have access to the raw files. That aside, I am getting used to the camera now.

Boy, if I can do my thing and not lose the bird in flight, then the AF is simply amazing. Just two examples of a gull taking off. I tracked him pretty well until I just lost him. But I did manage a nice sequence. And all are in focus. The second shot is my favourite of the bunch and one of the last ones I took of him in mid flight, he's already very near the edge of the frame. I lost him shortly after! :-P

I am amazed at how well focused the shots are. And all on the eye! I have yet to see a wingtip in focus with the head being soft! Amazing.

The more I am getting used to the camera, the more impressed I am!

Thanks!

And I wish! :-P

But today I had the same feeling I had when I bought the 1DIIN (coming from a 40D, which was my first camera). I was blown away then and I'm beginning to be blown away now.

I wouldn't ordinarily be using the 300mm with a 2x extender but I was set up for shooting out in the open when the sun came through. Instead I was going through an area of trees and bushes that was deeply shaded when this Downy landed nearby and I couldn't resist taking a shot. I was too close to get the full bird but am happy with this result at 10000 ISO.

That's funny, Don, as I was just about to post a pic of a gull taken with the 300/4L and 2xTC (mark II).

Your bird looks nice and fluffy and better than mine! Gulls are smooth birds and this is, yet again, a jpeg... Sigh, I'm never going to buy from that store again. This is the second time I have to wait too long for a small cable that is delivered in the mailbox. vmad

The type of bird matters for feather detail Levina and of course I was only about 4 meters from the bird which no doubt helped as well.

Thanks, Mike.

And yes, cropped. By a fair bit too. File is now 3141px on the long end. Full frame is 5472px.

The cable to connect the camera to my Mac with still hasn't arrived.

Out of curiosity, what cable are you waiting on? Am I correct seeing that a USB-C to USB-C cable for a Mac will be sufficient for effective transfer of images? I'm also curious what others are doing for file transfers. Using a cable or just a reader?

I use a USB-C cable to connect the camera body to my Windows computer. I transfer the files using Canon's EOS Utility because I rename the files during import in a way that Lightroom can't.

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.
