Hi, I'm posting this here in case any other R6 users have had similar issues (I've also created a seperate thread for this in the RAW, post-processing part of this forum:

I bought a Canon R6 recently and the last two times that I've used it, I've run into the same problem. Upon downloading to the computer, some of the files (CR3 format) come in just fine, and some either show in the thumbnail previews as blank (using Photo Mechanic) or with a large question mark (using DPP). I have not yet re-formatted the SD card (thankfully), and when I review the photos in-camera the images show up just fine.

I first downloaded using Photo Mechanic and thought that there may be a glitch with that software, so I installed DPP on my computer and as indicated above, DPP doesn't seem to recognize those files either. But I have not tried re-downloading the files using DPP - is it worth trying that ?

Any advice is welcome. The photos in this batch are basically irreplaceable, as this was for a very special event. If anything else, I've learned that in the future I should probably save a JPEG as well as RAW for these instances.

Mike ^^
I didn't experience similar misfortune
But my recommendation is to save to the 2 card slots (both raw and jpeg)
On second card you can go craw and small jpeg
Hope someone can help you out
My 2 cents

I've been using Faststone Image Viewer for scanning files and then copying the ones I want for processing with DNG Converter before moving them to LR5. The app handles CR3 files with no issues and is very fast. It's free, though users are invited to donate if they are happy. I figure it doesn't hurt to try it to see if you get better results.

Update: I got some really great support from the folks at Camera Bits (who created Photo Mechanic) - I think it was the fact that I'd inadvertantly changed my settings to HDR PQ Mode enable. This apparently changes some of the intricacies of the CR3 file that I'm ignorant of, and that currently PM does not support in preview mode. Camera Bits has asked me to send them some sample photos and the PM log so they can look into it further, but it's gonna be OK. Bottom line is, that the files are intact and fine, and as suggested by the support person, Lightroom Classic accomodates these files, so in the end all is well. An option is to convert to DNG files, BTW.

Thanks for the advice, guys!

Hey guys. Just picked up my R6 and I'm so stoked to go out and use it. I was wondering whether there was any way to change the names of the custom modes? I'm not sure if Canon has ever had this feature or not but it would be nice to have somewhere!

Did they show up initially? I have had something similar happen with RAW photos. I ran them through the Adobe converter and then imported and all was fine. Seems to only happen with RAW.

Very early in the morning in Belfast port area. You can see the MSC Virtuosa cruise ship arriving.

No, they were not visible, either in Photo Mechanic or in DPP. The support person at Camera Bits (PM) was a bit surprised that DPP didn't do the trick either, and suggested I make sure it was the latest version - have not yet done so. But since it was just a few hundred photos that were in this state, I just went ahead and imported to LrC, and there they were perfectly visible and usable.

Interesting. I did about 12 shots last night with the R6, all RAW. Downloaded onto Macbook Air, using Photos app, which is the only PP app that I use. Started to work with the photos and suddenly noticed that 3 of them were blank. Still on the card, loaded them via Adobe DNG, no issue. Went back to them today and clicked on the 3 "missing" photos and reverted them back to original and bingo, they were back and I was able to process them normally. Weird.

Congrats on the new camera! Sadly can’t help as I’ve never used the custom modes.
