I've had my R6 for nearly a year now. In the last month I've had several occasions when the viewfinder image freezes when I keep the focus button down. I usually wait a while to see if it clears, but end up shutting down and starting again. Anyone experience a similar issue? Thanks.

Hi Steve!

You are not the only one, others have reported lockups too, both with the R5 and R6. I started a thread about it here: https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=19282630

I have my R6 for four months, and have experienced the viewfinder image freezing for a minute or less. I’ve only had to restart the camera once, as it seems to unfreeze or restart itself. The last time it happened I took note: I had just turned the R6 on with the 100-400mm ll attached, (custom setting mode, servo, animal detect), viewfinder froze on previous image for approx one minute and the R6 restarted itself. I noticed the lens made a clunky sound as the camera unlocked.

Finsnapper, Dlee and Levina, thank you for your replies!

Subsequent to my post I contacted Canon. The tech I spoke with had me update my firmware for the camera and lens (100-500 RF). He also advised me to remove and reinstall the battery if it occurred again. I told him that wasn't a fix and that the birds I photograph don't wait around. I also said it would take some time and shooting to ascertain whether the issue was resolved. In the meantime, the warranty on my camera could expire and I wanted to be covered for this problem if it happened again post expiration.

Dlee, hope you avoid the issue. It took nearly 11 months for my R6 to start experiencing it.

Levina, I'll take a look at your thread. Thanks.

Speaking of GAS I have decided I want the extra megapixels of the R5. So I am trying to sell my R6. If anyone here needs another or knows someone in the market, please pass along my listing. Thanks! https://www.facebook.com …_post_id=4505824572789631 (external link)

Agreed, and I actually have AF ON and * set to two completely different setups which is also nice. You can set the AF selection button [] to be AF as well, but for some reason Canon decided to not allow you to configure it like you can with the other two buttons. If I could have 3 buttons that did different things, it would be very enjoyable.

Right now AF ON is Eye AF/iTR, with Case 4, and Servo.
* is set up to honor the current AF mode (zone, single pt, expansion), honor AI Servo/One Shot, and Auto Case
The last button (af selection) is set to toggle between AF modes
The movie record button is set to toggle One Shot and AI Servo

With this setup, AF ON is the most used mode (eye AF, itr tracking, etc). * gives me usually single point AF unless I use the 3rd button to change modes to zone, etc. If I want one shot and not AI Servo, I just change it by hitting the record button.

I'm trying to set up my new R6 to mimic your setup. I'm missing something; I can get the af-on button set to face detect, but how do I set that button to face detect servo vs whatever I have set in the m-fn menu?
Thanks!

Edit: figured it out, don't just choose eye af in the button menu

Rocking the R6 and (mostly) the 24-105 f4 L, 50mm f1.8 STM, and EF 135mm f2 L along with a few others.

What settings would you recommend for American Football. Eye Af in servo mode definitely didn’t work for me. I’m guessing due to the helmets and distance? And advice would be appreciated. Thanks

For eye/face detection to lock on, you have to be fairly close or be able to zoom in fairly close. How close to the field are you and what lenses are you using?

Usually 20-50 yards using Canon 100-400 v ii. Never able to get eye detect to lock on under these circumstances so I have disabled.

I'd try 1/2500, f/5.6, and whichever ISO yields a decent exposure. AF Servo, Mode 4, and use single point focus.

Just kids under 13 so definitely don’t need shutter speed that fast but will definitely try your auto focus recommendations. I’m having good success but looking for ideas to improve.
