Still practicing BIF with the R6. From my house and shooting everything that flies! Caught a cormorant today. They fly by regularly. I saw him coming and tracked him. I was in electronic shutter mode. I find it's much better for tracking birds than the mechanical shutter. With the ES there's no lag really. I put the images together in a little sequence, in Photoshop.

Some 3 or 4 seconds in the bird regurgitates a wee fish. I only saw it when viewing the images on my Mac. Pretty cool to have captured it.

The camera struggled with focus though. Not finding the eye or head or losing it. Sometimes not finding the entire bird. The bird was quite a distance away though, especially at first. And it was a dark, cloudy day. Before putting the images together I cropped them all the same, by about 50%, so that should give some idea of how far away the bird was.

Okay, let's see if I can make it play here...

In my early experience with the R5 it seems that it tracks WAY better when the subject is closer. I would imagine the R6 would behave similarly. Also the AF settings can affect this, I'm still trying to find the magic combo!

Thanks for dropping in, Ed. I'm glad you said that because, yes, that is my experience too. I use the double back-button focus method and I can't think of anything better to be honest. I'm experimenting with sensitivities now and trying out different cases, but so far no difference.

WooHoo! (Hopefully) joining the club Friday! Best Buy online had the R6 body-only and adapter in stock, and I got a 10% coupon to use on it, so got camera and adapter for less than retail on camera only. :)

Shipping confirmation! Both should be here Friday! Now I just gotta find a duck...

Ordered an R6 through CPW, and it arrived this morning, a day early! The 24-105L arrived a couple hours later. Got my adapter early this week so now just have to wait on the battery to charge, and will get by with a UHS-I card until my UHS-II card arrives Saturday.

Quick question. I bought an R6 for my niece and she is having trouble downloading the raw files from the card to her MacBook. She says she has Lightroom Classic updated with the latest update? Presently the only way she can transfer any pics is by wifi to her phone which converts them to jpeg. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Don't understand why Canon does not include the USB cable with the R6.

There's possibly WiFi to DPP?

I'm sorry I didn't explain the problem very well. She has a card reader but when she goes to download the files to her MacBook it won't read them.

Ah OK, could be a bad card reader or not compatible with UHS-II type cards. Have her test with a UHS-I type card.

Thanks for the reply. It is the same cards she was using on the 6D and 7DII and she has no trouble downloading the pictures from those cameras. I'm concerned it has something to do with the files from the R6 not being compatible with LR, but I'm not very technically inclined?

With my R5, Lightroom (classic, latest v. on a MacBook) recognises the card in the reader appropriately, but no longer automatically jumps to the correct folder with the image files, but stops one folder level up. It simply needs a double click on the folder name to direct Lightroom properly. Could that be your problem? If so, its an easy fix. Chris

Lots of bird activity in the Grand River. Even the deer crossing to the island stopped to take a look. R6 with 100-400 x2 extender at 600mm.

Compared to my Canon 100mm F2.8L Macro lens, I had previously found the Canon 180mm F3.5L Macro lens to be very slow at auto-focusing and so gave up trying on moving insects, relegating it to tripod mounted shooting only.

However, when I fitted it to my Canon EOS R6 and gave it a trial run in the back garden this morning, it seemed to AF a bit faster and more reliably, so there may well some life left in the old dog yet.:-)

Taken hand held, with the Canon EOS R6 using the Canon EF-EOS R mount adapter.

Cheers

Dennis

First clicks with the R6. I know already I will need to spend some time assigning functions to buttons and fine tuning to learn this camera.
First impression out of the box are pretty favorable. I put it in manual, Auto ISO, and clicked off some frames through the day. The AF does not like busy outdoor backgrounds, and I struggled with the center area a bit to lock in on small birds vs the surrounding area. However, the eye AF was really good with less busy backgrounds. The AF with the 100-400V2 and 1.4III extender was really good. I'm shocked how quiet the mechanical shutter is. Just a touch louder than silent on the 7D2.

Fairly aggressive crop of this Ruby Crowned Kinglet from the backyard.
