Highlight was a pelagic trip out of Dutch Harbor in the Aleutians. Primary target was the Whiskered Auklet which is found in a narrow range around the far northern Pacific Ocean. This is a heavy crop, shot from a moving boat. ![]() The bird is very handsome and looks amazing. Not easy to shoot it in flight from a moving boat, but you got it. Good shooting, Ken! But they're quite small - only about eight inches long. Ken

Shooting is a bit easier when the big birds come in to the boat. ![]() ![]() Oh, Albatrosses. They look big and powerful. I LOVE the last one. It made me laugh out loud. A great shot that. A great shot that. They are amazing to watch. Very elegant flyers except when landing. Wingspnas of six feet or more, but they only weigh 4-7 lbs, less than some Canon Big Whites. Ken

The Wiki says that albatrosses have the largest wingspan of any living bird. Geez, and I thought a Grey Heron had a big wingspan! They really must have been amazing to watch. Wild Birds of Europe

Laysans and Black-footed are tiny by comparison. Body length and wingspan are about the same as a Bald Eagle, but the thin wings look longer. Ken

Here's on folding its wings after landing. ![]() That’s a lot of wing to fold. I love how he seems to look at you. He doesn’t seem intimidated at all. I wonder if they would land on a boat sometimes. He doesn’t seem intimidated at all. I wonder if they would land on a boat sometimes. Like many seabirds they are used to following boats, especially fishing boats. And we were chumming, so they were especially interest in us, along with many gulls and fulmars Albatrosses spend their lives on the open ocean except to nest, so I don't think it would occur to them to land on a boat. I've always heard how clumsy they are on land so I was a little surprised at how adept they are at taking off from water. Ken

Fascinating, brightly colored, very skittish but fun to see!! Ed
