Past and Present

You may like to show your own images that compare the past with the present. Two images or more will be necessary for the comparison. Exact or estimated dates will be useful. My suggestion is that there is at least 20 years between shots unless there has been a rapid change in the landscape/cityscape/su​bject matter.

I will start. Westminster Mill. Horton Kirby. Kent. UK. An age old mill and weir. The mill demolished and replaced by housing.

Pictures taken nearly sixty years apart from approximately the same viewpoint.
Cropped to give a similar format.
The interior has changed a bit over the years and I think at the moment it is suffering from the effects of Covid19 lockdown.

Thanks Richard, no doubt you have spotted a few changes. During that time span TV transmissions shifted from VHF to UHF and colour TV emerged. You can just spot the difference in the antennas of the top pictures. Yellow lines sprung up in every village, and then the village got a 20mph speed limit.
The view for these pictures was from the church steps opposite.

Interesting we watched program on Roman Roads in Britain, Watling Street. Gets mention in that article you linked.

I was taken by the roof that appears to be different era. Materials, colours. Shows in top photo (left) and later one.

No dirty big satellite dishes which is good.

A fascinating place.

This church contains one of the finest collections of 'brasses' in the country.
I will try to sort some of the church pictures out later. It seems a bit unnecessary having two separate threads going for churches. I don’t know which one to use.

Battersea Power Station. London. UK.

A Cathedral to Power. Battersea Power Station is a decommissioned coal-fired power station, located on the south bank of the River Thames.
In it's time it was one of the largest power stations in the UK.
The Power Station is in two parts, A and B. Battersea A Power Station built between 1929–35 and Battersea B Power Station to its east, built between 1937–41, when construction was paused owing to the worsening effects of the Second World War. The building was completed in 1955. My Father was a senior engineer there during and after the war years. A key enemy target - the Power Station was never put out of action by the bombing.

Grain silos, how big are your grain silos?
I was surprised at the scale of the construction work going on with this Art Deco styled building when I was on the Thames last year. I could not find an earlier black/white film image for the comparison, but it would be very little different from the first because the power station has been a London icon since it was first built.

Thanks Joeseph. The picture was taken from the river bus in April. A reasonably inexpensive way of seeing the sites of the Thames, and you can get on and off at any point and rejoin any boat later on the same ticket - you can use the ticket all day if you want to. Keep the shutter speed up a bit because the boat goes rather fast.

Richard, nice link. That is an interesting development and not hard on the eye. It also doesn’t seem to be surrounded by a cluster mega city urbanisation. I do think it needs a few 3G and 5G cell phone antennas on the roof just to bring it into the 21st century.
