I'm looking to add this range, and I'm shooting on a 77D. (I love my Tamron 100-400 but sometimes I want something smaller.) I keep reading reviews of the Canon, and they are mixed. Nano USM great - sharpness maybe not consistent. I keep hearing how wonderful the Tamron is, but it's 10 years old, and I'm a bit concerned about the old technology. Can anyone who has tried both these lenses give me your opinion? The difference in cost in Canada is only about $30 (though the Tamron comes with a hood and a 6 year warranty.)

I should add that I would likely be using it at at the long end, and doing a bit of cropping. (And I don't have the $$ for the 70-300 L.)

Any advice?

Are you referring to the new Canon 70-300 NanoUSM? I think that is the II version.

If so, I have had this lens for a couple of years. It was the first telephoto I bought for outdoor sports. I really like the lens and have had very good results with it. The AF is blazingly fast and for my skill set, I find the IQ good. I have not used it on a full frame camera, only APS-C cameras like the 7D and 7DII

I still use it quite a bit when I don't want the size and weight of the 100-400. I think the 100-400 is better but at 3x the cost.

I have the 70-300 II and it is fast to focus and I find it very sharp. I would go for it

I also have the excellent 100-400 II for use with my 80D and 5D3. When I want something smaller and lighter, I use the EF-S 55-250 STM.
It is just as sharp as the 70-300 USM II and much cheaper. Some reviewers say the 55-250 STM is sharper. https://www.the-digital-picture.com …omp=0&FLIComp=5&APIComp=1 (external link)

If that doesn't interest you, I would say get the Canon 70-300 II as it is sharper than the Tamron 70-300 Di VC at 300mm. https://www.the-digital-picture.com …omp=0&FLIComp=5&APIComp=0 (external link)
