Ways to travel so my 600f4 is ready to shoot from the window.

Ok, new to the 600f4. I came from the 60-600 sigma sport. When I drove the back roads, I just had it laying in my lap. I drive a Ford truck and the center console lifts back. With this f4 laying in my lap and the lens points towards the window so I can be quick to get the shot if need be but I do not have much room between me and the steering wheel. It works but it sometimes puts pressure on the steering wheel which could be bad. I have my wife with me most of the time as she enjoys wildlife so the whole seat isn't available a lot of the time. I am wondering what some of you guys have come up with? If I lay it up on my center console when down, it isn't stable and can roll side to side.

I don't have a lens that big but the Siggy 150-600 is pretty hefty. I think a lot depends on if you are traveling alone or with a partner. If with a partner, I just let them hold it in their lap. But I'm guessing you are traveling alone. What I have done and it works quite well is I belt in a laundry basket in the passenger seat and sort of create a cushioned area with this big soft pillow I have. It's sturdy enough to stay put even if I have to slam on the brakes yet accessible enough where I can easily grab the camera and do what I have to do. It's not pretty, but it works.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

They are smaller than your 600, but for years I have put my 300/2.8 and later my 200-400/4 in a Kinesis Long lens case with the closed end on the passenger footwell and the open end resting on the front of the passenger seat. I can slide the lens out fairly quickly and it is well supported. With the greater length of your 600 thus may not work. When I have my gf along, she rides in the back seat where she can shoot out either window. Sorry to come along so late to this thread!

Perhaps a large beanbag could provide some stability with it on the console, as well as providing a shooting support.

Now that is an idea I haven't thought of. I bet I may have to have it custom made to fit my console. This may just work out for what I need. Thank you for the idea and thanks to the others who replied.

I found this bad at B&H. I can't tell how thick it is though once filled up with beans.

600 f4 owner here. I shoot with a large home made bean bag that sits over the window. Camera sits in lap and lens points out open window at an upwards angle. If I’m driving faster than 20 mph I set in the seat next to me. It’s a lot easier to move around inside if you’re not using the hood. A shorter collapsible hood is an option.

I rarely shoot this way because it’s pretty limiting in subject framing.

I put a piece of foam on the floor of the back set, create a C-shape with the foam, and the camera rests inside the C...if stopping suddenly the camera nestles deeper within the C.

  • Forcing you OUT of the driver seat makes sure your attention is on driving, not shooting
  • You get much better angles and true color when not restricted to shooting thru windows
  • You take a bit more time to compose the shot...sometimes simply stepping a few steps improves the shot

...when your car has four doors, the camera is very readily accessible, and well protected when in foam on the floor of the back seat!
