I am considering the Tamron as a lower cost alternative to the Canon alternative but I have noted the purchase of a docking station allows you to tweak focus. For those who have this lens is it a sensible additional purchase or does it just duplicate the afma built into the camera

I'm not replying to promote or knock any lens brand. I would highly suggest reading reviews and watching the online videos. Go find a store with the brands you are interested in and get a real life hands on feel for each one. Here's my experience earlier this year. I drove to a photography store and compared three lenses on the same camera body. Canon, Sigma, Tamron. I'm not here to knock any brands or any technical reviews. Image stabilization is important to me. Lets face it AF and IS features have spoiled me. Those features influenced my lens choice. I really prefer looks and solid feel of the Tamron 24-70mm G2 lens. (everyone hands are a little different). I like the Auto Focus, plus the longer warranty. The display model focused just fine and fast enough for my non professional needs. I spoil my equipment with the best care possible. Yes I drove 130 miles round-trip through heavy traffic and purchased the Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 G2 for myself. I read many reviews and comparisons almost 3 weeks. I found the docking station very simple and easy to use when I checked for any updates. Just having the ability to fine tune and customize the if necessary or desired is a great feature in my opinion. My Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 G2 works great right out of the box. I later purchased a new Tamron 150-600 G2 as well.

I got a used Tamron G2 for a good price and it comes with the dock so as for future firmware updates / compatibility upgrades (with newer Canon bodies). I would have got a brand new if this offer did not come by.
After studying reviews after reviews, would say it is a good alternative with 90% of the features at a much lower price.
Unless you are using it for say event / action / sports photography where AF is critical for your work. I would recommend this G2. :p
