Pine Marten

A Pine Marten visited our property earlier this week. It's only the third time that I've seen one here in 40 years. It was fairly early in the morning and a real challenge to keep my exposure parameters somewhat balanced. But, out of more than 300 shots, I got more than a few that I'm pleased with.

They are a bold animal and generally unafraid of humans. They are fast and powerful enough to chase Red Squirrels through the treetops and catch them.

Nice captures and interesting info. Didn’t know they hunted the treetops.

Two amazing images Al. Would love to see more of your keepers. I've never seen a Pine Marten, but I have seen Fishers. Captured them on my trail cameras lots of times as well.

Thanks, Terry. They are most elusive here as well. In fact, I've never seen one elsewhere, other than the three I've seen on our property over 40 years.

Thank you most kindly, Sandy. I've seen Fishers too, but only fleeting glimpses. Here are a couple other shots, since you asked. The color of the background on the first is imparted by fall foliage.

Those are some beautiful shots. I saw my first one this year. Amazing creatures, I could not believe how fast and agile it was zipping through a boulder field where Pika were squeeking, over and under boulders the size of small cars.

Thank you for commenting, Randy. They really are nifty animals and I'm glad you got to see one. When he was in our yard for the second time last week, he spotted a Gray Squirrel on the lawn quite close to him. I thought I would get to see him in action. But he just gave it a quick chase and when the squirrel went up a tree, the marten did not follow.
