I took this one recently and I personally like the rocks, the island and the long exposure on the sea. However as a whole it just doesn’t seem right on the eye.
I am by no means a good photographer but with a little constructive criticism I am hoping to get there.

Please feel free to post your cropped or edited ideas, many thanks

I like this shot. I think the line of cliffs leads nicely to the light house in the distance. Rather than describe in words, here's my thought. I hope you don't mind the editing. I also couldn't resist a touch of tone-mapping.

No problem with your editing at all, I’m just curious as to how many different crops may arise or if there is an agreement.
Thank you very much for your input ߘ

It's certainly not a "bad" image at all. You've got, and identified, a lot of great elements here; but it's just out of balance, mainly. The island/lighthouse and clouds, the foreground rocks and the water all all great, but I would suggest looking at how your elements balance out in your image and not include so..."much" of each one. There's too much open water to the left of the image, which is off balance with the large amount of rocks on the right, and your lighthouse is too small in the background and out of balance with the amount of open sky.

Giving yourself a tighter frame would still allow you to keep all of those elements in your image but more even. It also brings out the subtle detail of the rosy light reflecting in the water near the rocks, which ties the skies and water together really nicely.

Firstly, very nice image. I do like it a lot.

I think Joedlh has gone with a good crop.

Me personally, mine is a slightly different perspective, not sure its better.
But, there is more detail in those rocks which I think are worth exploring.

Edit for example:-

I would take a little off the left side so the water doesn't compete with the rock and add just a little more sky but no too much.

It’s a nice image and you’ve done well to handle such a wide dynamic range. For me, the original is a bit “right heavy”. The areas of interest are the rocks, lighthouse and submerged rocks, I think I’d just simply crop everything else out as these make a pleasing triangle that holds the eye.

If shooting again I’d try to make the submerged rocks a little more obvious to give some balance, particularly if you could get some more light on the right hand side rocks.

If you use lightroom, activate crop mode (R) then press L for loupe (L twice to remove all distractions, L three times to leave Loupe mode). It's a much better way to crop.

So looking at the rest of your posted work, you seem to like to do very simple color pallet images. I like the simplicity. On this image, along those lines, I would crop the top layer of dark clouds out. The second layer, the thin dark cloud could and probably should stay. You have a lot of heavy darks on the right side, and the top dark clouds seem to make it even heavier. By taking the top layer out, it creates to me a clear distinction between the dark cliffs and the background image. I hope that makes some sense. I would probably favor a 16:9 crop..... but its what I do now. its a form factor we are becoming more and more accustomed to. The wide 16:9 to me more represents how we see the world rather than the traditional 8:10 window to the world crop.

My two cents worth.

I have an entirely different take. Instead of cropping, I stretched it. This is contrary to prior comments about too much negative space on the left of the image. I feel this perspective suggests the expanse one might feel if he were to stand at the edge of the cliff staring at the vastness of the sea and the lonely distance set apart by the island in the far background.

Taking photos with a fancy camera does not make me a photographer.
