My state art federation has set up an opportunity for a small group of artists (no more than 12) to meet with "corporate art buyers, professional developers, and designers" to show off our artwork and make connections. Details on how these people use the art they buy is a bit scarce; this is the first time the art federation has done this. Aside from guessing that the art might be used in office buildings, hotels, etc., they haven't given much guidance. We're supposed to be ready to discuss our "artistic process", and bring business cards and "collateral information" about our artwork.

So, discussing my process is easy enough. But what kind of questions would this type of buyer ask? Will they have any interest in "process", or will they be more focused on things like price, type of print medium (e.g. paper vs. metal), maximum print size, quantity purchases, or other things?

There will be a silent auction of one work from each of the 12 artists to raise funds for the federation (we've each gotten a purchase award for our auctioned piece); the buyers may be purchasing these artworks for themselves or for business. So I think (I hope) the focus of the event is on quality pieces, and not quantity.

Can anyone advise on what I should expect, and what information I should be prepared to provide? I think it's a great opportunity, but I'm in uncharted territory and could use some help.

Thanks.

I assume there aren't any famous names amongst the artists.... so the buyers aren't people looking to invest in art.

Just a guess but as they are corporate buyers I think they are going to be interested in what you have available more than your process. What sizes/materials and prices. As they are corporate they will likely be looking for a coherent range of works to go in a hotel/office.

Thanks Dan, that’s how I’m approaching it. I have some more work to do on size/material/price in order to be prepared. Hopefully they will be interested in at least one of sets in my portfolio.

There were a couple nationally known artists in the initial group of 50, but they didn’t make the final cut of 12

In my experience, once you've met an Art Buyer the Art Department has vetted your work and they typically ask for an estimate for a project. It sounds as if the State entity has arranged a meet and greet to give new talent an opportunity to meet creatives that they might not normally meet. I would be prepared to show a portfolio and leave a card or promo piece with them. If it's simply a meet and greet and they ask about rates, I typically tell them that my work is based on how the images are to be used and the number of Creative days required. A Designer will usually work with the Art Director to create a piece in which images will be used.
