I'm using a EOS 70D for product photography with 18-55 EFS (kit) & EF-S 60 macro lenses, but seem to have a bit of a no mans land between the two lenses where neither seem best - either that or my skills / technique just suck, which is quite possible.

All shooting is tethered with a three flash set up & the majority of subjects range in size from 1/2cm to around 30cm, many at around 1>5cm, say nut / bolt / fastener size. Deep or reasonable DOF is preferred

Is there a significant gap between these lenses & is there anything Canon that you would recommend?

Thanks.

Can you elaborate on the in between? The difference in focal length is negligible. What are you not able to do?

A a small gap.
Zooming in and out on foot is cheaper than another camera lens.

It's entirely possible that it's just your expectations that are busted :)

What result are you trying to accomplish (i.e do you have any examples of shots that didn't work out)? And what, particular, shortfalls in the shooting process are you trying to address? Many possible options but we need to know what thing(s) you're actually trying to address :)

OP, you need to articulate, "What can I specifically NOT DO with my current two lenses!"
Only then can anyone tell you how to fix the problem, be it equipment or be it your methodology.

I don't really understand the question. At 1:1, the EF-S 60 is actually 37mm focal length, so basically right in the middle of 18-55mm. I don't know what the 18-55's focal lengths are at minimum focus distance, but unlikely to be what's indicated on the lens barrel. So very likely focal length is irrelevant for your question anyway.

Set at 55 mm, the kit lens is f/5.6. The macro is f/2.8 (well, the effective aperture is probably smaller, but the physical opening at least), which renders different looks for the images taken.

Post examples (your images) where you think the equipment is holding you back and it will help figure out the gear questions.

Very best,

I suspect the gap is not so much in the focal length but quality of the glass. The 60mm is a much better piece of glass from what I hear and it may be that the majority of the product photography is best suited to the 60mm and when you need to take something wider, the images just aren’t as sharp? I guess that doesn’t explain the “no mans land” you mention but I’m at a bit of a loss for that, I would consider a 60mm and 55mm lenses as an overlapping set.
