Atlantic Saury are a billfish that congregate in the Canso Strait between Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island every November. They're a perfect size for the local eagle population, who pig out for a few weeks. Sometimes we also see Leatherback Turtles and Humpback whales feeding on them.

With millions of fish in the water, they still fight over another one's catch.

Excellent series Ian! I really like first image...dining on the fly! Wish we had more Eagles here.

Many thanks Brad. I would guess there were 200 eagles in the immediate area, but not all super involved. They've been stuffing themselves for a few days already.

Excellent series, Ian.

If I were an eagle I might actually try to steal the fish from the seals' mouth! :-P

Great series! Quite jealous, my trip this November to photograph the migration is canceled due to covid/$$. Even had a 800mm lined up for a week from CPS.

Hi Levina! I’m not so sure that would be a good idea on the Eagle’s part. Thanks for commenting!

Thanks for the kind comment. There is no migration involved here though… Our Eagles stay all winter.
