I think the appeal of the f/11 primes is cheap, lightweight reach and the 800 offers more, so there's more interest in it. I rented the 600 mainly because I was renting some other stuff and the 800 wasn't available at the time. If I got one it would be for travel when birds or wildlife isn't the main purpose of the trip. For that the 600 would be more appealing because it is so compact. Otherwise I don't think I'd want to give up the versatility of my 100-400.

I think you nailed it in one there. I originally grabbed it because the 800 was out of stock, as well; but, in actual practice, there was no material difference between the output of the 600 vs my 100-400 v2 + 1.4 tC. And the EF combo still gives a better max aperture. So, I exchanged it for my 800.
For what it is, it's really a fantastic lens and if my current kit hadn't made it redundant, I'd probably have kept it. It handles both 1.4 and 2x TCs remarkably well.
A couple from it for posterity's sake. Both w/ the R5

The response time and AF speed on that second shot blew my mind; the eye-detect AF is just nuts.
