I've never started a lens thread before, but I tried one of these to a while back and couldn't find one. All images taken with my RP. The first two were taken on a 6.8 mile hike in the Sierra. My neck and shoulders said it's the best 600mm lens on the planet.

I used the 1.4/tc for the Coots and the Phoebe.

The Phoebe was very cooperative so I got shots with and without the tc. These are full size images (originally 6240x4160).

I cropped the TC shot to a size I liked, then applied an additional 1.4 crop to the bare lens shot so the bird is the same size. Shutter speed was 1/500 with the bare lens and 1/320 with the TC.

For anyone looking for or interested in a dedicated lens anti-twist plate for the RF 600, I wrote a brief "review" of a couple that are available out there right now:

Where is the love for this lens? So light weight that there is no excuse not to take your kit. A voracious Beaver from a couple of days ago.....

I think the appeal of the f/11 primes is cheap, lightweight reach and the 800 offers more, so there's more interest in it. I rented the 600 mainly because I was renting some other stuff and the 800 wasn't available at the time. If I got one it would be for travel when birds or wildlife isn't the main purpose of the trip. For that the 600 would be more appealing because it is so compact. Otherwise I don't think I'd want to give up the versatility of my 100-400.

Here are a couple more shots I took while I had it, both with my RP. The first is my scotty at 1/30 sec. For the second I used the 1.4 t/c. It's a 13MP crop, so about 1/2 the full frame.

...

I think you nailed it in one there. I originally grabbed it because the 800 was out of stock, as well; but, in actual practice, there was no material difference between the output of the 600 vs my 100-400 v2 + 1.4 tC. And the EF combo still gives a better max aperture. So, I exchanged it for my 800.

For what it is, it's really a fantastic lens and if my current kit hadn't made it redundant, I'd probably have kept it. It handles both 1.4 and 2x TCs remarkably well.

A couple from it for posterity's sake. Both w/ the R5

600 + 1.4x in pretty dark shade:

IMAGE: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51189584430_fb9db5a750_h.jpg
IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/2kZs12U (external link) Canon R5 complete frame (external link) by Eric (external link), on Flickr

600 + 2x TC, quick draw shot from the hip:

IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/2kZsKRR (external link) Bald Eagle IF (external link) by Eric (external link), on Flickr

The response time and AF speed on that second shot blew my mind; the eye-detect AF is just nuts.

I was trying to find this thread and posted my RF600 f/11 images on the f/4 thread OUCH

anyhow I have been using the 600/11, I first rented both the 600 and 800 at the same time and took them out for a week. I found the 800/11 gives more atmospheric effects and it is harder to get on target. Settled on the RF600/11

Just picked up this lens recently. Continuing from the RF600/800 conversation:

https://photography-on-the.net …read.php?t=1524036&page=6

I will start posting here with this little gem.

This shot with 31mm of extension (18mm + 13mm extension tubes) at just under 13' subject to camera distance.
