As old timers may remember, many, many years ago Ken Rockwell lit up forums everywhere.
He was polarizing.
I was curious why I have not heard about him in quite some time, so I started research.

In the process, I ran across multiple comments that Fro has taken Rockwell's place.

I know who Fro is, but I have never read anything he has written nor watched more than a minute or two of any video.

So who is he? What is he? Should be be listened to - is he helpful? Should he be ignored?

Feedback and opinions welcome.

Watch some of his videos and decide for yourself. I like that he doesn't bore me to death with test charts and specs I can get anywhere, but rather shoots them in real world situations and gives his impressions. He also shares raw files which is helpful.

Fro's okay, and there are times when I even look at what Ken has to say. But then there are lots of people and groups I'll read/watch.

Fro's a marketeer and, on some level, influencer. He's a photographer too, I guess. That's a funny thing to say, but I've never actually seen collections of his photos. I understand that pre-Covid, being a professional photographer was tough. Even some of the extraordinary photographers from film days had it tough. So, getting into other aspects of photography such as education, reviews, blogging, vlogging, et al, make some sense.

I've watched some of Fro's videos in the past but I don't follow him. He seems to know what he's talking about. He has his opinions and views, some of which I'm in disagreement, but that's okay. Unlike one "personality" in the photography vlog-sphere (not Ken), he's not a sensationalist. It's rather interesting that he had a video where he actually talked about meeting Ken, saying Ken's a very nice guy, though he still disagrees with Ken on many things.

Is it worth watching Fro? The fact you've only watched a minute or two of his videos says you're not interested and that it isn't worth your time watching him. Still, you could go to YouTube, look over his videos, and pick one on a topic you know. Watch it. Does he actually know the topic? Are you learning anything from it? Do you think you'd be able to learn something from other videos of his?

It's your time. If you get something of value from the time spent watching his videos, then follow him. If you think you could better spend your time doing something else, then do that.

I would not paint Jared with the same brush as Rockwell. Ken comes off as a huge egotistical blowhard, Jared just seems like people to me. I've enjoyed Jared's enthusiasm for the equipment he reviews. His videos on the 1DXIII AF system in particular were actually a significant influence on my decision to buy one. this may not seem like much, but I really tend NOT to by into youtube hype when it comes to my photography.

He's very opinionated and likes to curse a lot... which I find refreshing. His reviews are thorough and he tells it like it is. He puts out tons of content and I watch/listen to only a little of it but besides the fact that he's a FF snob (and not a Fujifilm fan) I think he's doing the community a good service as a whole.

He's definitely NOT for everyone... kinda' like Howard Stern.

The Howard Stern of cameras! :-P

Fro's an average photographer based on shots in his reviews. I don't have the patience to sit through his threatrics.

Rockwell's Legendary. The guy's been trolling the photography community forever and making money doing it. He's a total nut job and, well, I love him for it.

Very few youtube talking heads provide decent value for time invested watching their content. There's a lot of filler to meet monetization requirements. Also no shortage of unscientific testing and opinion that is presented as unbiased authoritative results (Hi Tony & Chelsea :))

If you're shopping for new equipment I'd stick with dpreview's web articles and side by side comparison tools. The DPR youtube videos are complementary but are generally subjective observations. POTN, FM or Flickr equipment groups may give you more user experience and real world samples.

If you're looking for photography oriented entertainment, Youtube. Random Camera Junk being the best (ie most offensive) of them.

Yea, kinda my perception too. As stated in the OP, that's primarily the reason I have only watched random minutes of his videos. He wastes so much time on irrelevant garbage he bores the P--- out of me.

Yep, and why I said many years ago he's brilliant. Not in his content, but with his marketing. I still marvel to this day the total ignorance of all who spent so much time hating him, not understanding that while doing so they helped him become more famous and make more money. Some people are just sooooo easily trolled.

I wasn't too fond of him at first but after watching more of his reviews I warmed up. It's kinda like this Seinfeld episode. "Costanzaaa" :-)

I think his reviews are pretty thorough.

I guess that's the problem with my post and the opinions contained therein.
I have never desired / used a review from YouTube or elsewhere.
Stuff like equipment reviews from YouTube or from forums are (1) subject to bias and (2) often created by people who don't know what the H they are talking about.
If I am going to seek and trust a review, it will only be (1) in the form of an article, and (2) from a trusted source.

Individuals in forums and talking heads on YouTube often do not have the resources, facilities, equipment, etc. to prepare a proper review.

The only thing I seek from Fro or any other YouTube source is instruction on how to use software, its functions, etc.

He does do that well. Atkins is decent too.

Agree. It's sort of a style versus substance thing. You can be put off a bit by the obvious over the top manner and appearance, but if you can set that aside, his content is pretty good.

As far as appearance he sure does not disappoint with the "fro" part. :-) I'd like to see him when he is 60 unless he decides to change that brand. Too bad I won't live that long.

You ever see that picture of Phil Spector in court years ago?
