I think being a good photographer and being a good reviewer of the technical merits of a lens or a camera have little relationship to each other. I don't worry much about whether or not Dustin Abbott is a good photographer when I read a review of a camera by him, for example.
I would be willing to wager you are to some extent correct. My son is a crack mechanic, who likes to buy tools specific to a task. He restores older motorcycles. He is the first to tell you that the right tool makes all the difference. He will also tell you he is a fanatic about the quality of tools... but is less so about brand.
At the end of the day though... he can get done what he needs to do regardless. The right tool makes it easier, but his skills are enough to get done what ever he needs to do. He is also a crack artist, and a good photographer. He still uses a Sony a6000.. and claims he has no desire to upgrade... though he does make himself welcome to my equipment from time to time.
So yes... tools matter. But a good photographer can create without the latest and greatest. Like my son, I would rather spend on traveling to compelling content then spending on equipment thinking that will differentiate my work from others.
But I do like new toys... lets behest about this.
.... Additional thought....
It is rather odd to me that the competence of the review with regard to the subject is irrelevant to you though. There are some sports photographers I deeply respect their opinions, because their body of work shows they know the intricacies and issues a sports photographer can deal with... such as how far and how well the camera can connect via wifi to a remote or ftp site... something a fashion photographer would have no need nor experience to understand. There is a great review from a photographer from Dubai on the Sony 100-600 lens versus a the native 600 f4. His clients didn't care if the bokeh was better with the f4 lens... they were not willing to pay for the difference. A lot hear sweat about how good the bokeh is.... but if the customer/client isn't wiling to pay a premium for that... it is pointless and a bad business investment. At the end of the day... what you business is makes a difference on what is worth paying for... something Jared has brought up correctly so in the past.
