Interested in a wireless shutter remote for a Canon 5D Mark IV. What brand do you use/trust? What have you found to be the pros/cons of your choice?

Could you use the camera's wifi with the Canon Camera Connect app? It is supposed to do more than just control the shutter. I've not used it, I've only read about it.

Still looking at options. Just acquired camera (2nd hand, literally just the body) with no software.

The canon connect app is supposed to be a free download for either Android or Apple devices.

I've had one from MIOPS since they ran a kickstarter for it about 5 years back. The Canon Connect is (marginally) functional but is slow and fiddly.

As an amateur photographer I wanted to explore the possibilities of remotes.
I started with a PixelPawn set. A small transmitter on the hotshoe and an EX 430 connected to the receiver.
With the cables that came with it I can also connect the receiver to the remote shutter. Walking around with the transmitter I could activate the shutter remotely.
On the long term the combination did not work flawless. Once in a while I had to reconnect the PixelPawns to get them working properly. The set is small so it fits in any corner of the camera bag. Because the build quality is not that great they broke.
Pro: small, cheap, remote flash and remote shutter
Conn: long term reliability, build quality

Four years ago I bought a set of PocketWizzard Plus X. They never failed me.
The build quality of the PocketWizzards is way better.
I recently bought a third unit so I can trigger two remote flash units.
The units are a bit bigger and mount vertical on the hotshoe so it sticks out a bit. When I mount a remote on the camera my baseball cap gets in the way.
This set also can be used als a remote shutter. By pushing the test button the other units can activate the shutter and flash. Very handy when MacGyvering a photobooth together.
For my needs the PocketWizzard Plus X units are perfect.
Pro: reliable, build quality, remote flash and remote shutter
Conn: bigger unit, a bit more expensive.

I cannot use the Canon App because the 1D4 and 7D do not have wireless.
The 760D does, but very often I have to reinitiate the WiFi connection from the camera. Technically it works but in my case it is not user friendly. (that’s what you get when you buy a cheap 2nd hand body)

The 7D can be equipped with WiFi, via the WFT-E5B. But the camera doesn't support Camera connect, nor can it be an access point.
You can remote control the camera with a web browser, but you either have to be able to do an ad-hoc connection, or go via a router in some infrastructure.

The WFT unit is market dependent, by the way. There are different versions.

The 1DX Mark II can use Camera connect, provided you equip it with the WFT-E6B or WFT-E8B.

On the other hand, the 7D is compatible with the RC-6 optical remote controller. You can also remote control it with 600 EX-RT flashes, or similar. Note that you need a trigger cable, so you can't use the newer 600 EX II-RT flashes.

YongNuo units work well, and have extended capabilities beyond a remote shutter. Look for the RF-605 units. These can remote trigger cameras, remotes, and even have one camera trigger another upon hitting the shutter on the master camera.

Which OS did you use? The Android app isn't the same as the iOS one. They can't be, because the operating system, programming environment, and functions called by an app to those operating systems are different.

Fair point; my usage was with the iOS version, on my phone and ipad.

Be aware that radio triggers to fire the camera remotely can have a significant difference in the range of the transmitter.
For example one range is stated to be 30m/100'. Another unit says "Operating Distance: up to 100m."

And units that trigger flash remotely do not always have a capability to trigger the camera shutter remotely.

I agree with the post that mentions Pocket Wizards being of higher quality (and price) than the Chinese knockoffs sold under multiple brand names (that look identical)

The YN units I pointed to have pretty good range, and I use these to fire remote cameras when I fire the main camera, which is a great tool to have, that you cannot really do easily with any other unit, certainly not in this price range.

I've used the Android version, and I think it was as expected. The only hickup is that if there are networks available with internet access, I have to convince my phone/tablet that connecting to the camera is the right thing to do, even if it doesn't provide any internet access. Once the phone locked on the right network it worked fine.

I've done linked camera shots (two cameras with WFT units set up so that when I take a picture with one camera, the other one takes one too). Ranges of 50-75 meters hasn't been any problem.

Just bought a wireless remote Canon RC-6 for my 5Ti. Says it should work out to 16'. After about 8 to 8.5 feet it does not work. The battery is about 3.2 volts. Anyone have ideas what could be the problem.
