Hi all,

I've been quite fortunate with a Christmas bonus this year and have $1,000 USD to spend on myself. I have some nice but older Canon glass (80-200 F/2.8L, 100mm macro, 28-70 F/2.8) and wouldn't mind getting a newer body (currently sporting a 7D MK1 and 5D MK1).

I want:

  • To keep my current glass
  • Low-light capability (ISO or IBIS)
  • Decent autofocus for photo AND video (my 7D has met my needs for photo, but video is quite... unfortunate)
  • Preferably full frame FOV (I honestly have more fun with the 5D than the 7D)

The only camera I know of that might fit all this criteria is the A7II, but the AF through a converter makes me nervous. I've always dreamed of grabbing a 5DIII, but the poor video AF is disappointing. Any thoughts or other ideas?

That is some nice glass.

I've got a 6Dii that I'm very happy with. I shoot zero video though.

You can find good used 5d III’s right now for around $800. This is an incredible value, but like you said the video is lacking compared to newer cameras. This would be my personal choice in your situation for a stills centered camera.

A newer camera would be the Canon EOS R. $600 over your budget but I think it would be the next choice past the 5d III. Shooting Canon glass through a Canon adapter isn’t a problem.

<$1000 — 5d III, great stills camera; mediocre video

$1000-2000 — EOS R, great hybrid camera; more resolution and good DPAF, single card slot

$1000-2000 (used or new) — 5d IV, better stills camera than EOS R, weaker video capabilities but still good, dual card slots. Stronger stills AF than R.

>$2000 — R6/5, fantastic cameras; best AF Canon, human/wildlife eye tracking AF, high frame rate

I've thought about the 6D / 6DII. The 1/4000 max shutter speed is unfortunate, and I love the weight of a metal camera. Those are petty reasons to shy away from the 6D series, I'll think about it... Apparently the 6DII has DPAF for video??? Gonna have a second look at it!

Some good thoughts. Can't go that far over $1,000. The RP is within my budget, I wonder if it's a good option?

That 5DIII would just feel great in my hands...

The RP would be a good option. The auto focus on the R cameras are really solid and much better than your 5D or 7D and will beat the A7ii especially with adapted Canon lenses. The low light will also be an improvement over your current bodies. The main thing that people complained about the 6Dii/RP (same sensor) was the poor dynamic range. Compared to most other current FF cameras, yes it's worse, but compared to the 5D and 7D it's a little bit better. DXO Mark rates the RP/6Dii at 11.9 stops, the 5D at 11.1 stops, and the 7D at 11.7 stops. So fairly similar but it is a slight improvement.

A local shop had the RP with the EF adapter for a good price. They are backordered though. I pulled the trigger, have a few days to think it over while waiting for the cameras to come in.

I have a bad taste in my mouth for consumer cameras because of Canons cheap plastic DSLR's. The controls are just clunky and they feel brittle. Though the RP is consumer grade, it sounds like it doesn't suffer from those issues. I'm really excited for the 6Dii level of ISO power!

The M6ii also caught my eye (especially with a speedbooster). Crazy specs, but the high ISO performance of the RP is too attractive.
