Did you recently do a Move or Copy operation?

That's because they are not where Lightroom thinks they should be. You have either moved them on your computer, or they are on an external drive that is not connected to your computer.

if you click on the exclamation mark you can navigate to where they are actually located if you did move them.

The LR catalog is just a database. It stores the metadata for each file, plus a list of edits/adjustments and a link to the location of the original image/RAW file.

If you subsequently move or delete the original files outside of Lightroom or disconnect the HD that they are on Lightroom will no longer know where they are. It will still show a link to where they used to be.

Click on the ! icon and navigate to the new location of the file to reconnect it. DO NOT try to reimport the original files and do not delete the current catalog entries.

Slim chance, but the OP should be aware of the “Capitalization” problem/bug that I think occured around 2016. I’ve been seeing a lot of people recently (late 2019/early 2020) reporting it again.

NO, I did not move any of the files. I can view/see images from years ago but not these.

Hmm in the folder panel on the left, right click the current folder with the missing images and choose "show in explorer" just to be sure it really is on your harddrive where lightroom thinks it is.

Click on the exclamation mark in the top right corner of each thumbnail, it should tell you what LR thinks the problem is.
