Point and shoot recommendation?

A friend asked my advice as to which digital camera he should purchase as a Christmas gift for his 11 year old daughter. His family will likely use it together too at times such as vacations. I thought maybe a G series but after some research I didnt realize there would be so many choices. Those with a point and shoot type camera that might make a recommendation would be appreciated.
