As far as I can find, the 100L IS is the sharpest macro lens for EF bodies. Is that correct? Not even the 100/2 Makro-planar is better? And nothing else has been released that performs better?

I would agree with that - VERY happy with mine; has been quite versatile in a number of situations.

There actually is a lot that performs better, IMO, and that's just from Canon :).

TS-E 50L Macro, TS-E 90L Macro, TS-E 135L Macro, 100-400L (I and II) with 500D achromatic close-up lens, MP-E 65, !80L Macro, and a few primes with extension tubes, like the 135L and 50 F/1.2L.

For ease of use the 100L Macro is great, and it is good, but personally, I do not like its rendering too much, and the fact that it becomes a +/- 72 mm lens at 1:1. I prefer the 180L over the 100L, although even that gets much shorter at 1:1 (approx. 120 mm).

The TS-Es are extraordinary when used for Macro, as are MP-E and 180L, but even the others I mentioned are great, with the 100-400L / 500D combo used a lot by outdoor small animal and insect photographers, giving you a 1:1 and 1.25 : 1 with the II, at great working distance. The 50L and 135L work very nicely and unexpectedly well in close focus mode with an extension tube.

HTH, kind regards, Wim

EOS R & EOS 5 (analog) with a gaggle of primes & 3 zooms, OM-D E-M1 Mk II & Pen-F with 10 primes, 6 zooms, 3 Metabones adapters/speedboosters, and an accessory plague
