The new version of Capture One (V21) is supposed to be much faster at displaying and proofing, yet on my computer it was even slower. I have a Macbook with an SD drive and plenty of memory and two GPUs. So, the computer is both mainstream and decent. So, I decided the problem was likely with something I had setup.

I use an LG HDR 4K Display, 27", 3840x2160. When i installed this monitor back in March, the default display size left me with huge icons and windows, so I used a scaling factor in order to get a display that resembled something like a hi-res display should do.

That was my error. I don't know exactly what display size I ended up emulating, but the result was scaling lots of programs. It turns out when setting the display size, and clicking on the Scaled button, you can hold down the Option key and get a drop-down of display sizes. I set the display size to be the native size or 3840 x 2160. My Capture One previews are also this size. The result is night and day. I can now move through lots of photos far quicker than before.

The GPUs are in use. I checked their utilization using System Activity, Window, GPU history.

So, don't trust the display software to work well with a Mac in all cases?

The only downside to this change is that some programs and web pages have a very small font. I need to work on Browser settings.

Thanks to the many people who have written on this topic over the years. I don't recall which articles gave me the required clues, but thanks to those authors. Solving this problem was done by reading a number of posts from all over.

Mike

On a Mac running Safari, for example, striking the PLUS key while holding down the Command key (⌘and+) will "zoom in" on the web page (make type and images larger). Striking the MINUS key while holding down the command key (⌘and-) will zoom out. For each press of the + or - key the display of the page will get larger or smaller.

Yes - run at your native display resolution. Many applications have preferences to alter the UI appearance, so use those instead of a global change in the System Preferences for the OS.

What really confused me is that I thought I was running at the default. Because the Apple Display setting said "Default." I suppose it was running at someone's notion of "Default", but after working with the native resolution, and doing as you suggest and fine tuning the individual applications, things are running much better.

I wonder how my flight simulators will run? Hmmm...
