While it might be worth it to be able to ditch the EF-RF conv I don't think you'll see an appreciable image quality improvement over what you have. How good is the focus speed on the old lens? What about MFD performance?

Thanks for all the responses. Focus speed is rapid with the EF 50mm 1.8, Chuck, no noticeable difference from my RF 24-105L. Haven't really tried anything to assess MFD yet but I understand it's 13.8ins. The new RF version has a shorter MFD.

Like you, Inspeqtor, I have hardly ever used my EF 50mm, but it's worth giving it a try. It's far, far better IQ than I expected, and it is wonderfully light. I'll have to try it for street photography. I took around 100 shots with the EF 50mm today and the R5 didn't freeze once, which is a change.

Here's another couple I took with the "nifty fifty" today...

Nice shot, especially with the 17-40. You got really good sharpness in the corners. You might check your sensor, may need to be cleaned.

Had the 17-40 f/4L out in the salty spray of Maine last week
Missed a few spots on the polarizer.
Looks any better? (top right corner had a spot)
Love these old lenses!
Cheers

Your R5 freezes? Some say they're prone to overheating but that is the other end of the scale. Why does it freeze?

Freezes, locks up, jams, sticks, falters... it all amounts to stops working. Well documented on here and darned annoying when it happens. Waiting for Canon to fix it with some new firmware. Waiting, hoping....

Thanks Terry, I knew what you meant, just trying to be funny. It must be very annoying. I don't own an R5 but I was curious about what conditions make it lock up.

Yes, I knew you were joking. Mine seems to happen mainly when I review images. I don't think it's to do with overheating. Oddly enough, it happens more often when I'm using my only RF lens, the 24-105L, than with EF lenses and the EF to RF converter. I wonder if it will freeze before I do when we get into the depths of winter. :-)

What is your firmware version? The freezing is probably caused by software.
