Definitely. I was sitting in that spot for quite a while waiting to get some better light on the peak. The Elk wondered out of the small grove of trees to the right. So then it turned into waiting on the light and the elk to pose just right. LOL

Jul 07, 2021 00:04 | #1083 Hey, folks, I have a question and hope someone can help me out. Many landscape photos I took had grainy sky and clouds. In contrast, the land is sharp and noisy free. For example the following photo was taken with a stable tripod. The aperture is f9 (sharpest aperture for canon 24-105mm lens), and focal length is 24m (wide angle) I focused about 1/3 of the infiniti. But I still got this granny sky and cloud. Not sure where the problem is. Any input will be greatly appreciated, Image hosted by forum (1110860) © shawnpan [SHARE LINK] THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. A great trip, but a lot of driving! From Dallas, it takes a while to get to Glacier.... Image hosted by forum (1110880) © Hannah'sDad [SHARE LINK] THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. Are you shooting JPG or Raw? Are you doing any post processing? I find that the sky is very difficult to capture accurately, due to the high dynamic range of the image and that often times I need to DeNoise the image (or at least the sky). Scott

I guess it is because the sky is smooth and light so any grain is lost in the detail of the land. What I do is isolate the sky and apply some smoothing leaving the land to look after itself. @Scott. Thanks for the input. I usually shot in raw with bracket. I merge the 3 or 5 bracketed photos into one and save in JPG (the forum only allow me to post photo with size < 10M). Next time I will do some noise reduction with the sky and clouds.

@Kenny, thanks for the suggestion. I will try it

Sometimes I find that skies tend to show noise easier if you've pushed the sky a bit in post but if you're bracketing that doesn't seem like it would be the case here.
