I looked up how long Redwoods live, seems like the average is 500 to 800 years, but some trees can get to 1500 years, a few even hit 2000 years. So that would mean they still have hundreds of years to grow. Someone must have figured out that the climate would allow them to thrive in a place that's on the opposite side of the world from where they evolved. Seems like there would be quite a few factors involved in figuring that out. I think at least part of it was luck - what I read suggested many different types of trees were bought in from many places around the world to see what would actually grow well here.
