Okay team, I need some help. Shooting video on a 90D
I just returned from a new client video shoot of a knife maker. I wanted some really cool slo-mo b-roll footage so I selected the 'Enable High Frame Rate' in the menu. The menu then shows it will record in 119.9 fps. I shot several clips of sparks flying, grinding etc.
BUT.. when I review my footage, those clips show up in Premier Pro and windows explorer as 30fps clips.
I know the camera made the switch, because these clips don't have audio ( as it warns you when you select the high frame rate.)
Has anyone else ran into this?
Have I missed a step somewhere?
This was my first time attempting to use the 120fps feature.
I did just try it again while sitting here and I get the same results. The camera shows that it is in 119.9fps mode. I did a test shot, and then when you look at the details of the file it only shows up as 30 fps

I don't know the 90D, nor do I shoot video much less high frame rate video

Is the camera RECORDING at 120fps (4X), but the (by default) playing back at 1X (30fps) so MP4 playback slows down what was recorded?

I just read the Canon 90D user manual

"Because High Frame Rate movies are recorded as 29.97fps movie files, they are played back in slow motion at 1/4 speed"

Well Wilt, thanks for doing the seemingly impossible task of referencing the manual for me... I just became 'that guy'.

I am curious to know the 'why' behind that. And more to the point, how to deal with it in post.

If I shoot 23.976 the clip gets identified as 23.976
If I shoot 29.976 the clip gets identified as 29.976
If I shoot 59.94 the clip gets identified as 59.94
If I shoot at 119.9 the clip gets identified as 29.976

Typically if I want slow motion, I'll shoot in 60fps and then slow it 50%-ish It's weird that this 119fps clip comes pre-slowed down to 25%

I guess to get it to play at 23.976 fps, I need to slow it down another 5%

Thanks John, I had found that clip previously on YT but apparently I missed the part where he explains that it already plays slow in your editor, and you don't have to adjust the playback speed. Thanks for the help.

Make sure you read the accompanying text. There is some discussion of some settings that affect the results.

This is exactly how it used to work with super 8mm and 16mm film cameras. The projector could only project at one speed, the camera would either shoot more FPS to make slow mo, or less FPS to make high speed Benny hill type stuff. When I was in Jr. high school I used to get it backwards all the time!

You've already found out that your headline is misleading. The 90D doesn't have any problems recording 100/120 frames/s, but it can't replay it at that speed. It's not supposed to replay it at that speed, it's supposed to do a slow motion move, at a quarter of the speed. A 100 frames/s recording will play back at 25 frames/s.

I'm pretty sure that both the Standard 8 and Super 8 cameras and Projectors that I used to use had the same three film speeds on both. Think it was 9, 12, and 18 fps. The 16mm projectors that I used were all 24fps only though.

You are probably right, unlikely that I would remember the actual speeds,. I was in high school last time I picked one up!
