Seems my iMac doesn't want to know a 128GB Sandisk Extreme Pro SDXC. I use the card slot and have never had issues with 64GB or below. iMac 27" 5K, OS Big Sur.
Photos/videos wont load and card has to be forcibly ejected. I've returned to Amazon (def not a fake card) and bought another 64GB but out of interest is this a known issue with the bigger card?

I am curious to know ..... did you open the program "Photos" while your card reader and this card were plugged in?

I use Photos, and have never had a problem with it "seeing" and downloading anything from any of my CF cards. . But sometimes, albeit very rarely, if I am not in Photos, then my iMacs are not able to "see" a CF card when it is plugged in.

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

No but I never used Photos before with any card either and they all opened. Today I have had the same problem with a new 64GB SD card (not CF). However by using a card reader rather than the slot in the iMac the problem is solved so maybe I could have successfully opened the 128GB too using a card reader.
The iMac's SD slot must be compromised.

See if this could be your issue.

The 128GB card might be formatted in exFAT, which is Microsoft proprietary. This format is used for big capacity cards so the card can be used for 4GB files. I had big problems some time ago with a 128GB card, trying to get my Android device to read it, without success. Apparently MS has not licensed the format for other operating systems. Very annoying.

When I had this issue, I remember trying to reformat the card as FAT32, but that failed and disabled the card. I had to return the card.

This was all several years ago and things might have changed, but it might be a file storage system issue.

Not much help but I use the same brand, type and size of card in a 2017 27" 5K iMac running Big Sur and have no issues. So it's not something inherent in the iMac or Big Sur. Sadly though my favourite raw processor, Photo Ninja, crashes with Big Sur (it ran fine until the OS upgrade).

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

Although a Microsoft format, Macs can read exFAT formatted media.

I see. So I guess that isn't it. Thanks.

“racketman”, have you tried what I posted earlier (see reply #4)? It involves a switch involved in the detection of the card that can get dirty and then the iMac doesn’t recognize the card. The typical symptom, which you seem to have, is the card or cards is not recognized in the iMac but seem to be OK using a card reader.

My 2013 iMac can read my 128GB Lexar SD UHS-II (external link) that I bought over the holidays.

Haven't tried that as I don't think the slot switch is stuck. It's all very strange. It can initially recognise the SD card (64GB 170mb/s, no longer have the 128GB) but I cant open the files in Photoshop whether jpeg or RAW and whether shot in Olympus or Panasonic body and then they disappear (actually still there when opened with card reader) and the disk has to be forcibly ejected.
No problem with same card when read from card reader.

A slower 95mb/sec 32GB works fine from the slot as does a 32GB 300mb/s so can't be the stuck switch.
All cards are exFAT.
Anyway I'm happy using a card reader, just intrigued now.

P.S seems to be the same problem W Johnson has in this thread, 22nd post down:
https://www.fuji-x-forum.com …a-in-macos-1015-catalina/ (external link)
the post after suggests its a problem when you combine an old internal or external card reader with a new OS and a new SD card !! Evidently my Integral 5 in 1 USB 2.0 card reader is new enough to match Big Sur and a brand new SD card but my late 2014 iMac 5K internal SD slot is too old

So you must be using an old OS or a new OS and a new card external reader (see above)

So, you have multiple cards that can’t be read from the iMac slot, but can be read from a reader. What makes you think the switch isn’t stuck. Have you opened the link I provided and read the procedure, which takes only a few minutes?

I'm using the built-in card reader and running macOS Mojave.

No only two brand new cards, the older cards are fine.
