Hello-

Hope everyone is well and started a good 2021. If not, let's hope it gets better. :-)

I've been trying to address this one issue. Using an STM Lens for video, with a focus pulling device (the gear ring around the focus ring).
The problem I am running into, is that with this particular lens (an 18-135 on a 7Dmk2), the focus range (say minimum to near infinity) takes easily a whole turn of the focus ring.

Question is, does a feature/menu option exist to graduate the amount of focus travel based on the movement of the ring? (For instance, so that it moves through the whole focus range in half a turn of the ring, rather than a whole one).

So far everything I've researched appears to be discouraging in this regard.

Thanks!

I'm not sure how that would work except by re-gearing your focus puller. I'm assuming by "menu item", you mean one of the camera menus? That wouldn't help because it can't change the optics, nor the mechanical movement of the focus ring and how that controls the movement of the lenses.
Maybe I'm not understanding the question.

I think you make a good point.

While STM focus rings are "fly-by-wire", it makes no sense that the camera would have a menu option to be able to say "Take three focus steps with one slight movement of focus ring" instead of the usual one step per one bit of ring movement.

The question is how to get the free turning focus ring on an STM lens to pull the whole range of focus (closest to infinity) with a short amount of focus ring movement. I am beginning to think this is not possible.

See, with mechanical focus rings there is a physical range of movement, so typically the ring movement does not exceed three quarters of a whole turn. These STM electronic focus rings, do not adhere to that rule.

Not sure if this makes a bit more sense, or if perhaps the question itself is flawed form the get go.

Thanks for taking the time :-)

I understand the question better now! I didn't know the focus rings were "fly-by-wire", I thought they were physically connected to the lens. Thanks for the explanation, and your patience.

I think I remember reading somewhere that fly-by-wire focus rings behave differently if you move them slow or fast. The focus may travel further for a given pull if you move it faster. Is there a way to increase the speed of your focus puller to try it?

I tried experimenting with my 18-55 STM and 55-250 lenses, and I think I can see this happen, but it is hard to say for sure.

These videos with a Sony mirrorless says focus speed does matter:
