Oatman, Arizona, a tiny ghost town near the Arizona/Nevada/California border is famous for two things: Historic Route 66 goes right through the center of town, and there are dozens of wild burros living in the surrounding hills who come into town during the day to entertain the visitors. The burros are decendents of the ones used by miners in the 1800's who abandoned their animals when the gold ran out and they left town. Some days there might only be one or two that show up in town, some days (like this one) there are 30 or 40.

The room in the old, rickety Oatman Hotel where Clark Gable and Carole Lombard spent their honeymoon, as well as many return visits (the room is not open to the public, so I had to shoot through a window):

Honey, they don't want your right hand... They want what you're holding in your left hand! (Many shops in town sell bags of carrots that the visitors can feed to the burros)

Get here any way you can... :D (Actually, he climbed up there to pose for a photograph that his wife was taking.)

Thanks again, Becca. Oatman is a real fun place to visit. The burros are great.

I'm glad you revisited that town, I loved you other photos that you took there and these are equally as wonderful. What a fun place it has to be to visit.

Love the burro/Harley shot. Three different modes of transportation. Tells such a story....

Nice photos.

I've done the Route 66 from Seligman to Topock a couple years ago and it was a very interesting trip. I did it during the Memorial weekend and Oatman for some reason was not that crowded. But there were a lot of burros though.

I always wonder why did Clark Gable stay there for his honeymoon??

Because at the time it was a pretty obscure, unknown and seldom visited town. He could easily get away from a mob of fans and enjoy a little peace and quiet. That's why he and Carole Lombard returned several times. Gable liked spending the evenings there playing cards in the saloon next to the hotel with the few people who lived in town.

That saloon is pretty interesting, too. The walls, and now some of the floor and ceiling, are covered with one dollar bills signed by visitors:

Good shots, Lonnie. We recently visited Oatman (January actually) and enjoyed the town. However, we were very disappointed that the burros never showed that day. Bummer.

That seems to be how it goes there. Some days they're all over the place, some days they just can't be found.

I was in Oatman for two days in January last year (the trip Sandy referred to above). The first day was like my visit a couple weeks ago -- the burros were all over the place. Dozens of them. The very next day, there was just one.

Thanks for the trip through the Southwest, Lonnie. I guess it will have to hold me until my August trip.
I have never been to Oatman but the burros are rather enticing.... love the pictures.

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

That is one busy little ghost town....Nice pictures, looks like a fun place. I especially like the 'Honeymoon Suite'. How things have changed.
