I just ordered a fringer which was mostly going to be paired with a 150-600 but I"m also interested in Macro work. What are my best options for lens for macro work. Mostly flowers and such.

I have an old Nikon 55mm f3.5 macro lens on an adapter.
Works like a charm.
It's manual focus, but in macro, you're working slowly anyway.

If you haven't gotten anything yet, I can suggest the Laowa 65mm f2.8 macro lens. It's a very useful lens in general, too. This was fun to shoot. It was actually a bright, sunny day when I shot this. Used a handheld off camera flash using TTL and a 10" or so softbox. Camera is the X-S10 with IBIS turned on and handheld. The "face" in probably about 8mm or so across.

Mike

If you are shooting flowers larger than 48mm x 72mm and fitting them into the frame, you do NOT need 'macro'...you need 'close focus' capable lens, generally distances less than 9-10 * FL for most conventional design non-macro lenses.
A Canon 100mm macro focuss to 3*FL (300mm), for example, while the Canon 100mm non-macro focuses to 9*FL (900mm). If you merely mount the 100mm non-macro lens on an extension tube, it will focus closer than its usual MFD.

If your flower was 4" across or about 100mm across, fitting it into a FF size frame (24mm x 36mm) requires only 1:4 reproduction ratio; 'macro' classically is defined as starting at 1:2 reproduction ratio....that would not be a 'macro' shot by classic definition (admittedly, today's common use of the term 'macro' is a bastardization of the classic term, but is most often only 'close focus'!)
If you put the 100mm non-macro lens with 25mm extension tube (with lens set at MFD) you can achieve 1:2.5, and with lens set at Infinity the same 25mm extension tube permits 1:4 reproduction, with a non-macro lens! It is far cheaper to buy an extension tube set, than to pay for 'macro' lens.

There are valid benefits to shooting with a true 'macro' design

  • Most macro lenses are 'flat field corrected', for copying flat art with the entire area in perfect focus
  • Most macro lenses are optimized specifically for good performance at any distances closer than 10x FL, whereas non-macro designs are not optimized for that close range.

Shooting postage stamps (2D) is a very diffferent thing than shooting flower blossoms (3D)
