Does anyone know if Canon is planning on somehow fixing the fact that the battery will drain completely in a few days if it's left in the camera when the camera is turned off & it's not in airplane mode? Very frustrating to have batteries drain when camera isn't in use. It's a pain to have to remember to put it in airplane mode. Just easier to pop the batter out but still, there should be a menu choice to put in Airplane mode when camera is off.

What is the problem in keeping the airplane mode on all the time and come out only when needed. This is how I have setup. Because I do not need the camera to connect on WIFI when not shooting (AKA off) and also when I am out shooting.

Good question. I like to use the bluetooth to connect w/Canon Connect app for GPS. I was able to disable the Wi-fi but keep the Bluetooth enabled & GPS set to smartphone & it captured GPS data. I'll see if just keeping bluetooth on will drain the battery. Thanks for the suggestion.

If you use the GPS feature, that in itself is a major consumer of battery power!
The wifi link and Bluetooth are also consumers, best left off unless actually utilizing that link.

Are you able to put those three options on the first page of My Menu? and then you could have the page come up first when you hit Menu. That is the fastest way I can think of that won’t take over function buttons more critical during a shoot.

It would be nice if those could be defined as a custom C slot too where you set them to be off. Then you would just switch to C3 for example before shutting down.

I was going to say the same thing based on how my 7D2 runs. But the R5 (and R6) don't have a built-in GPS. They can get GPS information from a smart-phone app, or with a Canon GPS (GP-E2)

I've noticed that if I keep the camera in airplane mode, the battery doesn't drain for over a week now just sitting on my desk with the camera turned off. I think it's just easier to use GPS Tracks when I go out & shoot. I would be more inclined use Camera Connect app to GPS the images if there was an option to put the camera in airplane mode when it's turned off. That should really be a future firmware update.

The my menu idea is great and perhaps folks don't use it often enough. I use it for those things I will need to change either frequently or quickly. Mirror lock up is a great example but obviously not applicable to a mirror less camera.

The batteries in the DX3 last foreva.

The externalized GPS connection to camera makes a ton of sense...drain a AA battery in the GPS unit for tracking, which is easily replaced in the field, rather than sucking down the camera battery, which is more bulky and heavy to carry extras while out in the field!

Then put the camera into 'airplane' mode if you do not need GPS update, to save on that connection drain.
