I just came across this article this morning, and as a bonus, there is another article speculating that the 8K video on R5 is just there for marketing... hmmm

The numbers do not make sense.

Article wrote:
Camera sales are going to drop by around 8% compared to the figures of 2010.

In 2010 Japan inc sold 12,973,860 units (according to CIPA). I believe Canon held something like 60% of the camera market at the time. This year as of November they have sold 2,157,817 a drop of %83. I'm thinking they left off a zero somewhere.
Also:

article wrote:
Mr. Tokura predicting an 8.2% drop in camera sales.

Would be a good thing indicating maybe we have finally reached the new normal. Last year (2019) Japan inc sold 4,312,158 and this year as of November only 2,157,817. That's nearly a 50% year on year drop. An 8% drop would be a good thing at this point.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I would just like to clarify something.

The article that the OP refers to speaks about Canon's total camera sales going down by 8%. . It says nothing at all about any of the camera prices dropping.
.

Canon Watch website article wrote:
.
Camera sales are going to drop by around 8% compared to the figures of 2010. The prediction comes from a Canon executive.

Another article on Toyokeizai cites Mr. Tokura predicting an 8.2% drop in camera sales.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I just had a look at real CIPA worldwide numbers, in units sold, for 2020 thru the end of November.

  • All cameras worldwide, Units 2020:2019, 2020 was 56% of 2019
  • Interchangeable Lens Cameras worldwide, Units 2020:2019, 2020 was 61% of 2019

Graph shows worst of 2020 slump was in May, with downward trend Jan-May, and the high point of the year was November, with upward climb June-Nov (no data available for December 2020 yet)

Of interest was the analysis of Japan home market behavior...shrinking share in the 20-49yo range, with relative growth in the over-50 range. Younger folks not as inclined to buy cameras, but rely upon smartphone cameras.

You must be trying to give a boost to the COVID economy all by yourself! We need to put a whole lot more folks back to work, to try to pull that off with a bit of help from others. 8-)

The damage has been done. Many businesses have found out they make as much with just limited access as they do full service.

Our kids use their phones solely
They are grown ups with partners
My wife says dear you had a camera pretty much since 14 years old, kids aren't interested period
Even extends now to couples and good set dishes and silverware etc
Lots of young couples have one set dishes and cutlery no interest in the "good" set

None of our daughters or husbands own a camera, even to take photos of growing families and activities of children as they grow older and play team sports or musical instruments! All use smartphones, and you can imagine the difficulty of trying to shoot your child in a field sport using digital zoom in your smartphone...it doesn't happen!
None of our daughters (33-43yo) own china or crystal or silverplate. Not interested.

CIPA graph thru end November 2021 (last report published to date, 1/20/22)

https://www.cipa.jp …cuments/e/sw-202111_e.pdf (external link)

For 11 month period, 2021 = about 6.8% more than 11 mo. 2020, but 2021 = 66% of 11 mo. 2019
2021 thru November = 8.7 Million cameras, 2019 thru November = 13.2 Million

...total camera volume is about the same as in 2003, close to the start of the digital camera surge, in an industry whose volume started churning with sensor improvement evolution.

(My speculation years ago was that volume might fall eventually to no better than 1997 volume!)

I’m always the guy with the big camera everywhere I go.

And then all my friends and family always want me to send them pictures on USB because the optics of a full frame DSLR are vastly superior to that of the tiny camera on an iPhone.
