Hi,

I am wondering if there is a way to find if a Canon lens is US made with the help of the available serial number?

I am buying it used without a copy of receipt.

So, wondering if there will be an issue with Canon repairs...Asking for this reason, mainly.

Thanks,
Kala

Can you provide the exact details of the lens? Focal length, f/stop, and things like “I”, “II” can be meaningful so include that info.

Two things, first of all Canon will repair any lens, receipt or no receipt, subject to its life cycle. This means that a lens I actually have, with receipt, from about 1995 is likely not repairable because Canon no longer supports the lens. And if you go to the Canon website for returning the lens, it may very well report back that. the lens is “no longer supported”. In that instance, you might be able to find an independent shop that will fix it. The Canon website to initiate a repair is https://www.usa.canon.com …ort/service-repair/repair (external link). You will need the serial number of the lens you plan to buy.

Secondly, a lens purchased used will not likely be covered by any Canon warranty so a receipt is of little value except to show the age of the lens.

I'm not aware of any Canon lens made in the USA (premium L lenses are made in Japan and other models made in other Asian countries). If the lens is old, chances are there is no warranty. If you're buying a used lens that still falls within a warranty period, you can check that the seller is including original packaging and warranty card (it's certain batches of lenses that receive North American packaging/warranty support).

No Canon lenses are made in USA. They are all made in Asia, (mostly Japan, but some in Malaysia, and Thailand) Canon warranty is only one year. If the lens is older than one year old, it makes no difference if it was imported as Canon USA or grey market. Canon will repair it just the same and charge you for it.

I just registered a International Version 6D on Canon Site. Just purchased camera this week. They took the registration with no warnings or questions. Canon will repair if needed, but no warranty. They will not work on equipment unless registered on their site first. My first 6D lasted 8+ years so if this one lasts for a year doesn't matter if USA or International.

6D, 6DII, 70D, 80D, R10, RP, Lumix DC-FZ80 and a bag full of lenses.
